Exclusive - Maloney to stage Fury-McDermott rematch

Promoter Frank Maloney is to stage the eagerly anticipated rematch between heavyweights Tyson Fury and John McDermott before the end of June after the British Boxing Board of Control rejected Mick Hennessy’s latest request to postpone the contest.

The rematch, which will double as a final eliminator for the British heavyweight title and also for the vacant English crown, was supposed to be taking place at a venue to be confirmed in Manchester to be promoted by Hennessy Sports on May 22. However, with Hennessy requesting yet another extension to postpone the rematch, the Board’s patience has finally been stretched.

A statement released today by Robert Smith, General Secretary of the British Boxing Board of Control, said:

“The Stewards of the Board refused an application by Promoter Mick Hennessy for a further postponement of this final eliminator contest and therefore the second highest bid supplied by Promoter Frank Maloney has now been accepted. Mr. Maloney has fourteen days to supply a date and venue for the contest, to take place by the end of June.”

Maloney promoted the first contest between Fury and McDermott in Brentwood last September which saw Fury awarded a highly controversial 98-92 points verdict from referee Terry O’Connor.
