Commonwealth Boxing Council gets new President

Under the supervision of Commonwealth Boxing Council (CBC) Chairman Philip Brook-Smith QC at Fountain Court Chambers in the Temple, London, the votes of the Directors were tallied and Ed Pearson of Canada was declared to have been duly elected as President of the CBC to serve a two year term, 2010-2012.

"Ed has been involved in professional boxing since 1990 and has served as Vice Chairman, Chairman and Executive Director of the Edmonton Commission and later as Secretary-Treasurer of the Canadian Boxing Federation, an office he held for 14 years," writes the CBC's Honorary Secretary, Simon Block.

"He also served as Executive Secretary of the North American Boxing Federation, stepping down when appointed as its Vice President five years ago. He is also a member of the World Boxing Council Ratings Committee and is Chairman of the WBC Female Championships Committee and it is hoped that his period in office will be marked by the first CBC Women Championships, the Championships of all weight divisions currently being vacant.

"Following the devolution of the Canadian National Championships Committee from the Canadian Professional Boxing Federation twp years ago, Ed serves the CBC as a Director on behalf of that body. He succeeds retiring President Frederick Sturrup JP of the Bahamas who has been closely associated with all aspects of CBC activity and policy during his period of office and who arranged for the CBC to be guests of the Bahamas High Commission in London who hosted its April 2009 Spring Interim Meeting.

"Ed, who will have big shoes to step into, both literally and metaphorically, says he is 'thrilled' at his appointment and affirms he 'will work hard to get more Canadians interested and involved in Commonwealth Championships, including the females'. Given the quality of Canadian contenders in so many weight divisions this could well be an interesting couple of years for Commonwealth Championships."
