The BoxRec summer interviews - Tyrone Nurse

The latest in a series of chats with pro fighters who post on BoxRec's British forum takes place with 20-year-old Tyrone Nurse.

The Huddersfield light-welterweight, who posts under the moniker 'Night-Nurse', is 13-0 and still very much at the learning stage of his career.

What has been the highlight of your career this season?

I would probably have to say getting on Sky! I didn't actually expect to get on the first time I did and was over the moon when my girlfriend (Leah) came charging into Gary Sykes' changing room and told me I was on sky...it was a good feeling! And also the second time when I got on sky (my last fight - a fifth round stoppage of Johnny Greaves - Ed.), same scenario as before! Girlfriend comes charging in and tells me I'm on, as I wasn't sure whether they would have bothered with the opponent being a journeyman....but there's going to be some much more exciting and meaningful moments to come!

Any low points?

Getting dropped in my 12th fight (in the second round by Sheffield youngster Adam Kelly), I wasn't hurt or actually upset by it; I was sat shaking my head and laughing to myself! So I guess being on your arse is about as low as it gets!

What do you realistically aim to achieve in the next year?

A decent step up in competition and a minor title of two, I'm not in any rush to move into the best of the bunch as i'm still growing and developing.

Who would you most like to fight next season and why?

Erm....I'm not really one to start calling people out, and can't say I've got my eyes set on anyone specifically. But hopefully some other prospects, lets take some 0's I say!

Is there anything you plan to focus on in training after the summer?

Just work on the same sort of things I have been since my last fight or so! Strength work and technique, you never stop learning in boxing so i'm always watching other fighters and analysing them.

Who do you view (other than yourself!) as the best British boxer in your division?

It's a good division at the moment. There's Amir sat at the top with his world title obviously, but the stand outs to me are Paul McCloskey, Frankie Gavin, and John O'Donnell.

Outside of your division, name one current British boxer you hold in high regard and explain why you rate them.

This is a tough one...it's between Tony Bellew, Nathan Cleverley and Kell Brook.  But since you gave me only the choice of one I'd say Tony Bellew! I remember reading about him in the amateurs and he was a knockout merchant, so when my dad (trainer Chris Aston) took Mark Hobson over sparring with him I didn't expect too much of him; just figured he'd try knocking Hobson out. But I was far from right, he had all the moves, he was slick, quick, clever, and matching Hobson for jabs and in every other department. I remember Hobson saying after sparring that he hit hard. Since then I've been a fan and expect him to do very well out of boxing.

What rule change(s), if any, would you like the BBBofC to introduce?

Same as most boxers would, have three judges for all fights like they do in America! If they hadn't of already changed the cuts rule I'd have said the cuts rule.

Are you a fan of Prizefighter or not? Either way, how would you improve it?

I was to start with, I guess I feel how most others do about it now....it's getting very boring as there have been so many of them so quickly.  I think if they'd have left a longer gap between them, the novelty wouldn't have worn off so quickly.  I'd change the rule that if an opponent is cut and can't carry on he is replaced by a reserve....instead I'd give the person who lost to the cut fighter the chance to carry on. Also the final would be over 4 rounds.

Why do you post on the BoxRec forum?

I haven't posted for quite a while to be honest, but I'm always reading! But there's many of times I've written a full page worth of text and decided not to get involved in the arguments because I'd spend forever arguing if I did post them, ha ha ha!

If you could name one BoxRec poster you would like to share a ring with, who would it be and why?

Erm......there's a few out there that write some complete poop and you sit there thinking 'what a wanker', but Im not going to give them the fame, ha ha! So i'd say Rhino222, Chris11, and Bomber 1!
