The BoxRec summer interviews - Stephen Smith

The final instalment in our series of interviews with current professional boxers who post on BoxRec's British forum is fittingly with Liverpool prodigy, Stephen Smith.

'Swifty' has the biggest night of his career tomorrow as he kicks off the TV boxing season with an intriguing looking Commonwealth title fight against experienced champion John Simpson. The match also doubles as a final eliminator for the British title, with the winner to face Ulster champion Martin Lindsay.

The Scouse featherweight, one of four boxing brothers, will have to travel to Glasgow to face the Scot and a good old fashioned England v Scotland angle always adds an extra layer of tension to the occasion.

Although a prodigious talent, it's a big ask for Swifty - an away match against a fit and improving champion whilst still, really, at the novice stage of his career (10-0). A fascinating evening is in prospect.

What has been the highlight of your career this season?

Getting a shot at the Commonwealth title against John Simpson.

Any low points?

Not fighting as regularly as I should has been the only low.

What do you realistically aim to achieve in the next year?

Win the Commonwealth Title then capture the British title.

Who would you most like to fight next season and why?

The main men I want next season are John Simpson and Martin Lindsay as they hold the titles I want!

Is there anything you plan to focus on in training after the summer?

Just working on how I will beat John Simpson. Not looking past him.

Who do you view (other than yourself!) as the best British boxer in your division?

Martin Lindsay and John Simpson are the top two. I need to beat both to prove I'm best.

Outside of your division, name one current British boxer you hold in high regard and explain why you rate them.

My brothers Paul and Liam. Outside the family then it's a tough one, I admire many fighters in this country and feel it's a real hotbed for talent these days. To name one, I'd say Frankie Gavin. I came right through the amateurs with him and he is special. Ultimately...skills pay the bills in this game and he has them in abundance!

What rule change(s), if any, would you like the BBBofC to introduce?

I think the cuts rule was a step in the right direction.

Are you a fan of Prizefighter or not? Either way, how would you improve it?

I have enjoyed some but not all. I think it appeals to the non-boxing fans a little more I believe.

Why do you post on the BoxRec forum?

Just always been a follower of boxing and like to know people opinions, good or bad...as well as put my own points across.

If you could name one BoxRec poster you would like to share a ring with, who would it be and why?

Probably Billy Nelson (trainer of John Simpson) at the minute, ha ha ha! No, he is a good fella, Billy. Not too sure to be honest, haven't really had any problems with anyone.
