Behind The Results week ending 24 August 2010

Eric takes us on his weekly whirlwind worldwide tour.
August 18 Monroe, USA: Light Middle: Erislandy Lara (13-0) W TKO 1 Willie Lee (17-7). Light Heavy: Yordanis Despaigne (7-0) W PTS 10 Frank Paines (11-1). Lara floors southpaw Lee and forces early stoppage. Easy win by Cuban Despaigne, 30, who floors Paines in second and wins on scores of 100-89, 99-90 and a too close 96-93.
August 19 Texas City, USA: Cruiser: Felix Cora (21-3-2) W TKO 5 Rubin Williams (29-11-1). Re-building after first round stoppage loss to Troy Ross in Singapore tournament, Cora had no trouble making it three stoppages in a row against passive Williams who just looked to survive. A low blow from Cora in the fourth hurt Williams, who was given a couple of minutes to recover, but he retired in his corner at the end of the round. Ten losses in a row for “Hollywood” who has settled for being a record padder.
August 20 Tucson, USA: Mercito Gesta (19-0-1) W KO 7 Genaro Trazancos (22-12-1). Filipino southpaw prospect Gesta, 22, took a while to warm up, but comfortably handled the aggression of 35-year-old Mexican. “ No Mercy”, who turned pro at 16, lived up to his name in the seventh with a volley rounded off with a straight left that ended the fight. Trazcanos no real test as he is 1-7 in his last eight with six of those seven losses by KO/TKO.
Cleveland, USA: Heavy: Nicola Firtha (19-7-1) W PTS 10 Mike Sheppard (15-11-1). Building on his upset win over Tony Grano, former top amateur Firtha, 31, wins Ohio State title and retains NABA title as he is too busy for West Virginian Sheppard, 39, who was dangerous at times with his right. “Stone Man” settles for a majority verdict on scores of 97-93 twice, 95-95.
Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic: Light Welter: Victor Cayo (25-1) W TKO 2 Jose Castillo (0-9). Super Feather: Francisco Lorenzo (34-8,1ND) NO DEC 1 Javier Fortuna (10-0,1 ND) Super Middle; Julius Jackson ( 7-0) W TKO 1 Nelsido Agramonte (0-9,1ND). Light Middle: John Jackson (7-0) W TKO 1 Valerio Marte(6-11). Light: Argenis Mendez (18-1) W PTS 4 Ambioris Ciricao (1-5). Feather: Carlos Reyes (17-1) W KO 1 Norberto Jimenez (0-3). Rubbish show. “Mermelada” Cayo, in first fight since losing to Marcos Maidana for interim WBA title, fed a soft touch. Fortuna looks on his way to quick win as he hurts former “WBC champion” Lorenzo only for a clash of heads to leave the unbeaten Fortuna too badly cut to continue.
Both Jackson brothers in shameful matches. Agramonte lost seven of his nine fights by KO/TKO and Marte has eight losses by KO/TKO in a row. World rated Mendez, who beat Martin Honorio in May, just goes through the motions for four rounds with poor Ciricao, and Reyes, who had Nick Walters on the floor in his losing bout in December, blows away another no hoper. The local Commission should be sacked and the promoter should refund all ticket money, as the matching was a disgrace to boxing.
Formosa, Argentina: Feather: Mauricio Munoz (19-2) W PTS 8 Lucas Baez (9-4-2). Stronger Munoz has to come from behind and as Baez fades he edges his way to a split verdict on scores of 79-77, 78 ½ -77 and 77½-78.
Fortitude Valley, Australia: Super Fly: Fred Mundraby (11-0-1) W PTS 10 Flash Villacura (23-29-3). Easy for talented Aborigine Mundraby, 22, as he wins every round against experienced 33-year-old Filipino southpaw loser. Aussie bantam champ Mundraby wins vacant Australian super fly title. Scores 100-90 twice and 99-91. Only twelve fights in over four years so Mundraby needs to be more active. Villacura now only one win in his last 17.
Flemington, Australia: Super Feather: Will Tomlinson ( 13-0) W KO 8 Elly Ray . Heavy: Justin Whitehead (5-0) W PTS 10 Colin Wilson (35-26-1,1ND). Welter: Sam Colomban (17-3-0) W PTS 6 Ade Alfons (14-11-3). Cruiser: Brad Pitt(6-0) W TKO 3 Walter Pupu’a ( 11-9). Fly: Omari Kimweri (7-2) W PTS 6 Ricky Manufoe. Predictably easy win for “Wild Bill” as the promising 24-year-old puncher dominates unknown Indonesian and kayos him in eighth to win interim WBO Orient title. Now 12 by KO/TKO.
In a battle of heavyweights, close in weight but miles apart in pro experience, Whitehead lifts Australian title with a split decision over 38-year-old champion Wilson. A former Australian amateur champion, who lost to Audley Harrison in the semi-finals of the 1998 Commonwealth Games, Whitehead did not turn pro until he was 36. Southpaw Wilson has held the Aussie title on five occasions now.
Useful Colomban, 24, from Cameroon took a points decision over modest Indonesian. Pitt too good for Tongan in a cruiser bout. Pitt, a Commonwealth Games gold medalist in 2006 where he beat Dan Price, also competed in the World championships and Beijing Olympics, and is a cruiser to watch. Little Tanzanian Kimweri, 4’11”tall, the Australian champion, takes every round against Indonesian.
Navojoa, Mexico: Super Feather: Leonilo Miranda (32-2) W KO 5 Carlos Medellin (18-9-2). Light Welter: Abraham Barrera (17-1-1) W KO 3 Jaime Maldonado (6-12-1). Puncher Miranda floors “The Butcher” twice and closes his left eye on his way to win No 30 by KO/TKO. Leonilo was outclassed by Orlando Cruz in January 2009 and was shown to be a big banger, but with limited technique. He outpointed Medellin back in 2008. “Iceman” Barrera, 22, makes it twelve by KO/TKO as he puts Maldonado out of the fight with a body shot in third. Despite his record, Barrera has struggled even against modest opposition in the past.
Toscolano Maderno, Italy: Light Heavy: Vigan Mustafa (15-2) W PTS 12 Maurizio Lovaglio (7-7). Light: Luca Marasco (16-1) W PTS 6 Mike Carrero (9-13-2). Mustafa ,31, born in Kosovo, uses height and good jab to lift vacant IBF Mediterranean title with his seventh win in a row, but stable mate Lovaglio makes him fight hard for it. Weird scoring as one judge has it 118-109 another has it 116-111 and the third 115-112. Former Italian champion Marasco unimpressive as he looks lucky to edge out modest Nicaraguan. First fight for 28-year-old from Turin since losing his national title and his unbeaten record to Emiliano Marsali in May.
Guadalajara, Mexico: Welter: Daniel Sandoval (16-1) W TKO 2 Crispin Martinez. Poor match as Sandoval overwhelms Martinez. All of 19-year-old Sandoval's wins have been by KO/TKO but very poor opposition.
Bangkok, Thailand: Super Feather: Fahsai Sakkreerin (28-2) W KO 5 Sony Fony. Slow start by Fahsai, 28, but takes over and finishes obscure Indonesian with body shot in fifth in first defence of his IBF Pan Pacific title.
August 21 Erfurt, Germany: Cruiser: Marco Huck (30-1) W TKO 5 Matt Godfrey (20-2). Heavy: Robert Helenius (13-0) W TKO 6 Greg Tony (12-1). Cruiser: Enad Licina (18-2) W PTS 8 Ismail Abdoul (35-18-2). Light Heavy: Dustin Dirks (16-0) W KO 2 Sami Selesman (4-2). Middle: Dominik Britsch (20-0) W PTS 8 Lorenzo Cosseddu (23-4-5). “Kapt’n Huck hands out a one-sided beating to Godfrey. Floors his American challenger at the end of the second, puts him down again in the third, but from a low blow. The beating continued in the fourth and two more knockdowns in the fifth as the referee stops the fight. Fourth defence of his WBO title by 25-year-old Serbian-born German and now 23 wins by KO/TKO. Southpaw Godfrey, 29, showed good movement in first, but then never in the fight.
Another one-sided bout as big Swedish-born Finn Helenius,26, floors crude French champion Tony, 32, four times on the way to a sixth round stoppage win. The 6’6” tall Helenius, a European silver medalist as an amateur, wins vacant European Union title as he builds on recent victories over Taras Bidenko and Lamon Brewster.
Serbian Licina, 30, bouncing back from loss to Yoan Pablo Hernandez in October, wins every round in repeat victory over durable Belgian veteran Abdoul. Scores 80-72 from all three officials. Poor match sees Dirks, 21, make it ten by KO/TKO and seven in a row as a he kayos inexperienced Finn late in second round. Britsch , 22, given good learning fight by experienced and game Italian Cosseddu who uses a clever left jab to pile up the points and runs the unbeaten German close. Scores 77-75 twice and 78-75.
Newark, USA: Heavy: Tomasz Adamek (42-1) W PTS 12 Mike Grant (46-4). Light Middle: Joel Julio (36-4) W PTS 10 Jamaal Davis (12-7). Welter: Sadam Ali (9-0) W KO 5 Lenin Arroyo (20-13-1,1ND). Light Welter: Jerry Bryan (14-1) W TKO 1 Dan Mitchell ( 5-2-1). Adamek given a much tougher fight than expected despite the wide decision. Adamek started fast and dominated the early rounds. Grant finally woke up late in the sixth as he hurt the 33-year-old Pole and cut him over the right eye. Adamek was cut again in the eighth but had a good ninth. Adamek got going again in the tenth and eleventh, but was hurt and badly shaken again in the last, Scores 118-110, 118-111 and 117-111. The former WBC light heavy and IBF cruiser champ was giving away 6” in height, 43lbs in weight and 11” in reach. The trouble he had with Grant does not bode well for how he would fare against one of the Klitschko brothers. Grant, 33, had rebuilt with eight wins since losing to Dominic Guinn in 2003, and put up one of his better performances in losing.
Colombian Julio 25, needing a win after losing to Alfredo Angulo for the interim WBO title, was on top for most of his ten rounder against Philadelphian Davis, but could not find a finisher to add to his 31 wins by KO/TKO, and had to settle for a unanimous verdict on scores of 99-93, 98-92 and 97-93. Multi-titled former amateur
Ali on top against Costa Rican and finishes things with a body shot in fifth. Ali was a member of the US team at the Beijing Olympics. Bryan bounces back from a shock loss to Vince Arroyo in April with a win, as Mitchell retired at the end of the first claiming impaired vision.
Tijuana, Mexico: Super Bantam: Guillermo Rigondeaux (6-0) W TKO 6 Jose Angel Beranza(33-19-2 ). Super Feather: Joksan Hernandez (21-2) W KO 1 Ira Terry(24-4). Middle: Jose Pinzon (17-1) W TKO 1 Javier Gutierrez . Feather: Alejandro Lopez (19-1) WPTS 8 Edgar Riovalle (27-11-1).Fast, accurate and hurtful punching and another impressive display from Cuban former amateur Rigondeaux as the “Jackal” takes apart 34-year-old Mexican. Beranza never in it as he is floored twice in fourth and retires at the end of the sixth round. The 29-year-old southpaw could fight for a world title right now. Hernandez,23, crushes poor Terry with a big right in first. “El Torito” from Ensenada has 13 by KO/TKO and in previous bouts scored impressive wins over Miguel Beltran and Daniel Ruiz. Terry’s record is deceiving as his opposition has been hand-picked.Same for Pinzon who kayos poor Gutierrez. A serious lack of punching power means that Lopez has to go the distance for a decision over useful Riovalle.
Irapuato, Mexico: Marco Antonio Rubio (48-5-1) W TKO 6 Jose Luis Zertuche (21-7-3). Super Fly: Victor Zaleta (16-1) W TKO 3 Julio Cesar Cabrera . Middle: Marcos Reyes (16-1) W KO 3 Miguel Angel Tena. Light: Cesar Soto (63-20-3) W TKO 3 Jesus Gonzalez (14-3-1).War between these two experienced Mexicans both throwing lots of punches but Rubio’s defence the stronger. “Poison” takes over in the fourth, hurting Zertuche who spits out his gum shield to get a respite. The fifth sees a fading Zertuche cut and a big attack by Rubio in the sixth brings the finish. The 30-year-old former WBC/WBO title challenger has 40 wins by KO/TKO and was too strong for 36-year-old Zertuche as he repeated a 2008 result. This was the WBC Fecarbox title, but Zertuche came in over the poundage.
“Nene” Zaleta, takes an easy one and halts outclassed Cabrera. The former top amateur could be one to watch. No contest as Reyes floors a then flattens poor Tena. “Dorado” Reyes, 22, has 13 by KO/TKO. “Cobrita”, Soto, now 38, feeds on inexperienced Gonzalez and halts him in three. Soto was WBC Feather champ back in 1999, losing his title to Prince Naseem Hamed.
Puerto Plata, Dominican Republic: Felix Perez (7-0) W TKO 2 Alex Perez (23-40-4). Light Middle: Hector Sanchez (19-1-1) W TKO 1 Nelson Sanchez (3-1). Olympic gold medalist Diaz , 26, a southpaw, makes it five by KO/TKO as he floors veteran Cuban Perez early in first and has him badly hurt when his corner man climbed onto the ring apron to bring the stoppage. Perez, 38, has lost his last 15. Must be dustbin week in the Republic as “The Thin Man” Hector Sanchez bounces back from upset loss to Cleo Pendarvis and halts his namesake in 129 seconds. More rubbish.
Dallas, USA: Welter: Charles Hatley (13-0) W TKO 2 Dumont Welliver (18-22-1,1ND). Light Welter: Mark Davis (14-0) W PTS 8 Justo Vallecillo (6-12 ). Former amateur champions Hatley and Davis stay on track. Hatley, US champ in 2007 now has eleven by KO/TKO after halting Welliver. Davis, US champ in both 2005 and 2006, still can't find a punch as a pro and settles for unanimous verdict over Vallecillo. Scores 80-72 twice and 78-74.
San Luis Potosi, Mexico: Super Fly: Jose Cabrera (19-2-1) W PTS 10 Luis Leon (11-2). Cabrera wins interim WBC Youth title with a unanimous decision over tall Colombian southpaw. Cabrera almost pulled out due to illness and lacked his usual fire. Leon is 27 so how he qualifies to fight for the Youth title is a puzzle.
