Eric Armit refuses to let East Fife's continued slide into Scottish football ignominy distract him from public service. Here is his global boxing digest for last week...March 31
Auckland, New Zealand: Heavy: David Tua (51-3-1) W PTS 12 Friday Ahunanya. Tua slow but aggressive whilst Ahunanya shows rust and boxes on retreat. Not impressive, but Tua, 37, deserves win on basis of his effort and Nigerian Ahunanya, although showing good skills, just does not do enough. Tua retains WBO Asian Pacific and WBO Orient titles on scores of 120-108, 119-109 and 117-111.
April 1

Light Heavy: Yathomas Riley (8-0) W TKO 2 Walter Foster (4-2-1). The 29-year-old Rodriguez too big, strong and busy for natural light welter Arnaoutis and wins unanimous verdict on scores of 119-108, 118-109 and 117-110 to retain USBA title. Greek Arnaoutis loses a point for low blows and is cut over left eye in eleventh and just does not do enough work.
World rated southpaw Greene makes hard work of it against Gray but wins unanimous decision on scores of 79-73, 78-74 and 77-75 in poor fight.
Former World amateur champion Andrade is taken the distance by Spruiell. .No knockdowns but switch-hitting Andrade wins every round. Scores 60-54 on all cards. Cuban Barthelemy hurt in second but Benitez cut badly by punch in third and bleeding badly in fourth when fight stopped. These two each collected a hatful titles as amateurs with Barthelemy a former World and Olympic champion (2004 when Benitez also competed in the Olympics). Too easy for former National Golden Gloves champion Riley, a 27-year-old southpaw, who scores two knockdowns from body punches in first and clean kayo in second.
Las Vegas, USA: Light Middle: Erislandy Lara (11-0) W PTS 10 Danny Perez (34-7). Super Feather: Carlos Ivan Velasquez (12-0) W KO 4 Ira Terry (24-3). Cuban southpaw prospect Lara, 26, boxes his way to victory over 33-year-old Perez. Has Perez hurt in fourth and fifth, can’t find a finish, but wins nine out of ten rounds without getting out of first gear. Lara too fast for veteran. Scores 99-91 on all cards.
Puerto Rican Velasquez, 25, hurts late sub Terry in third and flattens him with a volley in fourth. Ten by KO/TKO by former top amateur who is one of twins. Terry’s record flatters him. Upset as prospect “El Flaco” Sanchez scores two knockdowns over much smaller “opponent” Pendarvis. Then southpaw Pendarvis tears up the script and floors and halts Sanchez with right in fifth. More rubbish for Olympic bronze medallist Wilder, all over in 33 seconds. Eight first round wins in a row for 6’7” Wilder which will teach him nothing at all, a waste of everyone’s time.
Washington DC, USA: Super Middle: Henry Buchanan (19-2) W PTS 8 Julius Fogle (15-3,1ND). Heavy: Seth Mitchell (16-0-1) W TKO 3 Ryan Thompson (9-9).Buchanan, just one loss in his last 20 fights, taken the distance as he has to adjust to facing late sub Fogle. Damages right hand early but boxes his way 77-75 twice and 78-74.unanimous decision. Thompson, 39, no real test for 27-year-old “Mayhem” Mitchell, and under pressure in third when his corner pulls him out.
Philadelphia, USA: Derek Ennis (21-2-1) W PTS 10 Jose Gonzalez (13-7-1) .Nine wins in a row now for Ennis but a tougher than expected night as he overcomes cut eye caused by head clash in seventh and more than expected trouble form modest late sub Gonzalez. Ennis takes majority verdict but weird scoring as two judges see him winning by six clear rounds (98-92) and one sees it as a draw (95-95). It’s what happens when your method of judging any contest is the equivalent of a beauty contest. Two wins in his last nine for Gonzalez.
Pont-Sainte-Maxene, France: Light Welter: Yvan Mendy (19-1) W KO 5 Beka Sadjaia (20-10-1). Hometown fighter Mendy, 24, finishes Georgian with right in fifth. Sadjaia has never won a fight outside Georgia.

Las Vegas, USA: Light: Sharif Bogere (15-0) W TKO 1 Martin Tucker (7-6).Ugandan Bogere, 21, gets controversial win. Tucker cut by clash of heads. At the end of the round Doctor says Tucker ok to fight on, but Tucker says vision being hampered so decided not to continue and then ruled to have retired on his stool, perhaps a no decision would have been fairer.
New York, USA: Light Heavy: Ronson Frank (15-0) W TD 5 Alex Mancera (8-4). Guyanan Frank, a 6’3” southpaw, floors Mancera in second and wins every round before Mancera cut by clash of heads in fifth. Scores 50-44 on all cards. This for NY State title.

Hopkins wins ugly in fight with more fouls, and clinches, than clean boxing. First five rounds uneventful. Butts from Hopkins open cuts over Jones eyes in second and eleventh rounds. Hopkins down three times, twice from rabbit punches and once from low blows and both fight after the bell at end of sixth. Only one points deduction against Jones as Hopkins agonising play-acting did not impress referee. Hopkins had the better of the late rounds and revenges 1993 unanimous decision loss to Jones on scores of 118-109, 117-110 twice. Both Hopkins and Jones go to hospital for observation (Geriatric ward?). Hopkins says he now wants David Haye! It was a fight between a 45-year-old and a 41-year-old and it looked like one. Jones 5-6 in his last eleven talked retirement.
Controversial ending in crossroads fight as taller fighter Litzau wins technical verdict. After six close rounds Litzau pulled out as left eye closed. Litzau retains NABF title as ahead on cards 67-66 twice and 68-65 but Juarez protested that injury caused by punch. Litzau kayoed by Robert Guerrero for IBF title in 2008. Juarez is 0-4 in title world title shots.
Mora, former WBC light middle champ, and winner of the first “The Contender” series, in his first fight since losing his title to Vern Forrest in September 2008, cut in first round, slowly breaks down aggressive Green who turns away from the action when under pressure in the seventh. Impressive victory for 25-year-old Ukrainian as Sillakh floors more experienced Judah twice for stoppage. Scot McEwan constantly switching stances. The 22-year-old from Oxnard wins vacant USBA title and makes it 18 by KO/TKO. After a break in jail, Denver’s Alvarado returns and becomes first man to halt Costa Rican as hurts then floors and stop him. Lopez from Cut and Shoot plods to unanimous verdict but not impressive.

Meraz warned numerous times for not putting up a good fight and finally stopped in seventh when hurt and under pressure. Now 13 of last 14 by KO/TKO for 21-year-old Ruiz. Montes, and former IBF strawweight champion Leyva, fighting on even terms when a butt from Leyva cuts “Goofy” and unable to continue so winner on disqualification. Nine wins in a row for Montes, but how 30-year-old Leyva qualifies to challenge for the WBC Youth title is anyone’s guess. Saguilan impressive as he floors de Los Santos with uppercut then twice more with body shots in fourth. Wins vacant WBC Latino title.
Benidorm, Spain: Roberto Santos (15-4) W PTS 10 Blas Martinez (11-1).The Benidorm Tiger" Santos retains Spanish title for first time as he takes unanimous verdict over previously unbeaten Martinez. Scores 98-93 and 97-93 twice.
