Eric Armit goes 'Behind the Results' to give us the lowdown in his global boxing digest.

April 27
Kempton Park, South Africa: Light: Zolani Marali (21-4) W PTS 10 Kgotla Baeti (19-2-1). Super Middle: Thomas Oosthuizen (13-0) W KO 8 Saul Roman (32-7). Once world rated, a fading Marali, 32, still had enough left to take a split verdict over Botswanan Baeti, on scores of 97-92, 95-94 and 94-95 in a dull fight. A big super middle weight beats a light middle, as southpaw “Tommy Gun” Oosthuizen, 6’2” tall, proved too powerful for game Mexican Roman. Apart from a spirited attack by Roman in the fifth it was Oosthuizen all the way and a big right in the eighth put Roman down and out. Impressive display by Oosthuizen.

St Petersburg, Russia: Cruiser: Enzo Maccarinelli (32-4) W TKO 1 Alex Kotlobay (18-2-1).Middle: Dmitry Pirog (16-0) W TKO 6 Sergei Melis (15-2). Light-Heavy: Dmitry Sukhotsky (15-1) W TKO 1 Pablo Daniel Zamora Nievas (24-8-1). Welter: Sherali Mamadaliev (11-0) W KO 1 Herve De Luca (15-5-1). Heavy: Max Vlasov (17-0) W TKO 3 Vasyl Kondor (18-11-1).Big win for former WBO champ Maccarinelli as he overpowers Russian. Left hooks to the ribs put Welshman in control then big right over the top floors Russian. Kotlobay up quite quickly but badly hurt and right uppercut in follow-up attack puts him down again and referee stops it without a count. Maccarinelli wins vacant European title. Third one round win in a row for 29-year-old Welshman.

World rated Pirog uses tough Estonian for sparring practice. Gets serious in sixth and finishes with body punch to win WBC Baltic title, the fifth different title he has won in his last eight fights. In his first fight since losing to Juergen Braehmer for the WBO title, Sukhotsky floors and halts Argentinian in 96 seconds. Nievas went the distance with Anthony Mundine for WBA super middle title in 2007. Tajikistan-born southpaw Mamadaliev retains WBO European and PABA titles as one overhand left puts Belgian out cold in just 18 seconds. Vlasov, who splits his activity between Russian and the USA, too good for Ukrainian who has lost five in the row by KO/TKO.

April 29
Broadbeach, Australia: Super Middle: Les Sherrington (26-5) W TKO 4 Rubin Williams (29-9-1). Heavy: Alex Leapai (18-3-3) W KO 1 Bob Mirovic (29-22-2). Seven wins in a row for 27-year-old Aussie. As usual Sherrington attacks from the first bell and sweeps the first three rounds before a cut forces Williams out of the fight. Sherrington retains WBF (oundation) and PABA titles but, as 34-year-old Williams did not make the weight, he could not have won them. Now seven losses in a row for former IBF title challenger. Leapai floors veteran Mirovic, 44, early in round then finishes him with big right hand. Mirovic stopped in four rounds here by Matt Skelton and Danny Williams in Commonwealth title challenges.

Fort Worth, USA: Heavy: Kirk Johnson (37-2-1,1ND) W TKO 1 Doug Robertson (3-24-2). Rubbish match as 37-year-old Canadian Johnson floors inept Robertson twice for stoppage in 105 seconds. First fight for Johnson since 2006 challenge to Vitali Klitschko.

April 30
Tokyo, Japan: Bantam: Fernando Montiel (41-2-2) W TKO 4 Hozumi Hasegawa (28-3). Super Bantam: Toshiaki Nishioka (36-4-3) W TKO 5 Balweg Bangoyan (15-1). Super Feather: Takahiro Ao (19-2-1) W TKO 8 Whyber Garcia (22-8). Mexican Montiel, 29-year-old southpaw WBO champ, adds WBC title. Behind on all cards after first three rounds then explodes left hooks to stop Hasegawa. Montiel, also a former champ at fly and super fly. Eleventh defence for Hasegawa and the first time he has been stopped inside the distance, but reportedly Hasegawa suffered a fractured jaw in the first round. Nishioka has too much speed and power for Filipino novice and retains WBO title. Nishioka, 33, and also a southpaw like Hasegawa, was briefly shaken in the second and Bangoyan lost a point in the fourth for low blows. The end came in the fifth as Nishioka floored the Filipino with a left, although the youngster beat the count the follow-up attack forced the stoppage. Fourth defence for Nishioka. Former WBC champ Ao, yet another southpaw, returned to action with a stoppage over former WBA secondary title challenger Garcia.

Las Vegas, USA: Light Welter: Robert Guerrero (26-1-1,2ND) W TKO 8 Roberto Arrieta (35-16-4). Heavy: Deontay Wilder (10-0) W TKO 3 Alvaro Morales (4-8-5). Former IBF feather and super feather champ Guerrero shows his class as dominates with his southpaw jab and finishes with his devastating straight left. Guerrero, returning after taking time out to support his wife who is battling cancer, scores knockdowns in second and third and again in eighth to bring stoppage. Wilder shows flaws as he struggles to deal with rotund Mexican (Morales 73lbs heavier and one win in last nine fights). Confused ending as 6’ 7”, Wilder appears to punch then push Morales to floor and Mexican hits head on canvas, stays there for about 30 seconds and when he gets up his corner calls it off.

Chicago, USA: Super Middle: Marcus Johnson (19-0) W PTS 10 Derek Edwards (25-1). Super Middle: Don George (20-0-1) W PTS 8 Osumanu Adama (17-2). Light Heavy: Edwin Rodriguez (15-0) W KO 6 Kevin Engel (17-3, 1ND).Prospect Johnson wins wide unanimous decision over cautious “Black Lion”. Johnson presses fight and outboxes previously unbeaten Edwards. Scores 98-92 twice and 97-93, as 24-year-old Johnson wins vacant NABO title. Johnson lost to Andre Ward in the 2004 US Olympic Box-Off. Great little fight between local favorite and tough Ghanaian Adama. Plenty of exchanges with seventh round knockdown by “Da Bomb” George wrapping up unanimous verdict on scores of 76-75, 77-74 and a too wide 79-72 as Adamu looked worth a draw and would make a good challenger for George Groves Commonwealth title. Despite a rocky third round Dominican-born Rodriguez, a former national Golden Gloves and US amateur champion, was in control and slowly broke up Engel before putting him down for the count with a devastating body shot. Eleven by KO/TKO for “La Bomba”.

Miami, USA: Bantam: William Gonzalez (25-3) W TKO 2 Jose Luis Araiza (27-2). Super Middle: Michael Oliveira (12-0) W TKO 4 Jessie Davis (11-18). Nicaraguan southpaw Gonzalez, 31, retains WBO Latino title and wins eliminator as he shakes Mexican in first and floors him twice in second twice to bring about stoppage. Araiza unbeaten in 27 going in. Brazilian golden boy Oliveira, 20, given two hard rounds by Davis but turns it on in third and forces stoppage in fourth. Oliveira now has ten wins by KO/TKO.

Panama City, Panama: Middle: Daniel Edouard (23-2-2) W TKO 2 Jose Arosemena (12-6-2). Feather: Ricardo Cordoba (37-2-2) W PTS 8 Jose Gutierrez (12-8-2). Feather: Nicholas Walters (14-0) W TKO 6 Alex Alonso (7-17-1). Haitian Edouard takes his time against aggressive Panamanian then crashes home counters to force stoppage to retain WBA Fedlatin title. “Maestrito” Cordoba has a comfortable win as scores of 80-70, 80-71 and 79-71 suggest. Third win for Cordoba since stoppage loss to Bernard Dunne for WBA secondary title in March 2009.  “Axe man” Walters cuts down Nicaraguan in sixth. Eleven by KO/TKO now for Jamaican prospect.

Managua, Nicaragua: Straw: Carlos Buitrago (15-0) W TKO 3 Hector Elizabeth (7-9-2). Light: Moises Solis (18-1) W KO 3 Carlos Mairena (20-14-2, 2ND).Bantam: Daniel Diaz (18-2) W PTS 8 Rey Cajina (8-4-2,1ND).”Chocorroncito” Buitrago, just 18 but looks about 12, batters Elizabeth for three rounds and loser does not answer bell for fourth. Eleven inside the distance for Buitrago, but a proposed title shot at WBO champ Donnie Nietes in July seems premature. Southpaw Solis, 26, finishes Mairena with a body shot and now has 13 by KO/TKO. ”El General” Diaz takes wide unanimous verdict over Cajina.

Windhoek, Namibia: Welter: Jerry Nekhubvi (5-0-1) W KO 2 Ali Nuumbembe (23-5-1). Bantam: Paulus Ambunda (11-0) W TKO 3 Tendani Munyai (9-6-2). Light: Martin Haikali (5-4) W PTS 12 Jatoorora Tjingavete (12-4). Welter: Mordechai Donga (13-7) W PTS 6 Jason Naule (12-4). Shock result as last minute sub Nekhubvi catches former Commonwealth champ Nuumbembe with a sucker punch left uppercut in the second. Nuumbembe counted out on his feet. In 2007 Nuumbemebe won Commonwealth title by beating Kevin McIntyre ( a fight supervised by myself) and lost it to Craig Watson. South African novice wins WBO African title and this his first stoppage victory. “The Rock” Ambunda Retains his WBO African title with left hook as South African challenger floored and unable to continue. Seven by KO/TKO for prospect Ambunda.

In all-Namibian battle Haikali overcomes slow start and finishes strongly to win unanimous decision 116-111, 115-112 and 114-113 over 5’10” tall challenger, retains his WBO African title and evens score with Tjingavete at two wins each.Zimbabwean light middle champ Donga wins on the road as he beats former WBA African light welter champ Naule on scores of 59-55 twice and 58-56.

Mazatlan, Mexico: Bantam: Tomoki Kameda (13-0) W TKO 3 Narciso Lara. Light Fly: Jose Rodriguez (22-0) W PTS 10 Ivan Meneses (14-7-1).Eighteen-year-old “El Mexicanito”, youngest of the three Kameda brothers, makes it eleven by KO/TKO and retains WBC Fecarbox title. Hometown hero “Torito” Rodriguez wins wide unanimous verdict over former WBA challenger on scores of 100-90, 98-93 and 97-94.

Edmonton, Canada: Cruiser: Frank White (7-3-2) DREW 12 James Cermack (16-2-1). Tough, exciting battle for vacant WBC Continental Americas title between two top rated Canadians ends in majority draw with two officials scoring it 114-114 and the third giving it to White by 115-114.

May 1
Las Vegas, USA: Welter: Floyd Mayweather Jr (41-0) W PTS 12 Shane Mosley (46-6,1ND). Light Middle: Saul Alvarez (32-0-1) W TKO 9 Jose Miguel Cotto (31-2-1). Feather: Daniel Ponce De Leon (39-2) W PTS 10 Cornelius Lock (19-5-1). Welter: Said Ouali (27-3) W TKO 1 Hector Saldivia (33-2). Super Feather: Eloy Perez (17-0-2,1ND) W PTS 10 Gilberto Sanchez Leon (21-7-2). Light: Luis Ramos Jr (15-0) W TKO 2 Allen Litzau (13-5).This was a competitive fight-for two rounds. Mosley had Mayweather rocking and badly hurt in the second and never won another round. Mayweather put on a master class as his speed and movement were too much for Mosley who suddenly showed all of his 38 years. Mayweather, 33, was in control from the second but seemed content to box his way to a one-sided victory. Scores 119-109 twice and 118-110. Mayweather declined to pay the sanctioning fee to the WBA, so he could not win the WBA title.

Mexican Alvarez, 19, hurt in first round recovers and takes command flooring Puerto Rican Cotto, the elder brighter of Miguel, in second and his heavy right hand punching gets him on top and has Cotto hurt when referee stops it in ninth. Alvarez has won 9 of his last 10 inside the distance. Cotto, 32, is a former secondary WBA light title challenger.

In an all-southpaw battle former WBO super bantam champ De Leon retains WBC Latino title. De Leon just can’t figure the crafty Lock and is constantly frustrated but keeps plugging forward, and Lock not as busy as should have been. Difficult fight to score but Lock finished strongly and looked unlucky to lose on scores of 97-93 and 96-94 twice.

Bombs away as Roger Mayweather trained Moroccan southpaw “Prince” Ouali, 30, is floored by two rights after just 12 seconds. Jumps up at eight. Saldivia wildly swinging for finish walks onto southpaw right hook and is down and in a bad way. Gets up and takes the eight count but overhand right puts him down again and although he gets up he falls over and the referee stops the fight. Ouali retains NABO title.

Light-punching Perez too fast for Mexican, but Sanchez Leon keeps busy and applies pressure and makes it very close. Majority verdict with scores 97-93, 96-94 and 95-95 as Perez retains NABO title. Another impressive win for 21-year-old southpaw Ramos. Floors Litzau and has him under pressure when referee steps in.

Oldenburg, Germany: Cruiser: Marco Huck (29-1) W TKO 9 Brian Minto (34-4). Light Heavy: Karo Murat (22-0) W PTS 12 Tommy Karpency (19-2-1). Middle: Dominik Britsch (19-0) W PTS 8 Alessio Furlan (24-16-5). Heavy: Kubrat Pulev (8-0) W DIS 7 Evgeny Orlov (11-7-1). Easy defence for Huck as he floors game but outclassed Minto in third, fifth and ninth rounds and 35-year-old American does not come out for tenth, but Minto body shots scored too often for Huck to be impressive. Third defence of WBO title for 25-year-old “Kaptan” Huck and now 22 wins by KO/TKO.

Iraq-born Murat floors game American southpaw Karpency with left to head in second and wins clear unanimous verdict on scores of 117-110 and 116-111 twice to retain WBO Intercontinental title, but American’s height and reach made it a good test. Britsch, 22, given good workout by Italian veteran but wins unanimous verdict on scores of 79-73 twice and 80-72. Bulgarian “Cobra”, who stopped Matt Skelton in January, wins as 6’9” Russian finally thrown out for persistent fouling.

Merida, Mexico: Tomas Rojas (33-12-1) W TKO 4 Jorge Cardenas (14-11-4). Light Middle:  Jaime Barboza (15-3) W TKO 7 Jose Pinzon (15-1-1). Super Bantam: Ramon Maas (20-0) W TKO 4 Oswaldo Juarez (12-8). Fly: Omar Soto (19-6-2) DREW 6 Juan Kantun (14-1-2). Southpaw former WBC interim champ Rojas, 29, scores four knockdowns in halting overmatched Cardenas. Upset as Costa Rican “El Indio” Barboza climbs off canvas in sixth and only just survives. Corner gives him one more round and then he floors local unbeaten Pinzon with a big left. Pinzon beats count but unable to continue. Barboza wins vacant WBC Youth title. “La Cobra” Maas, a southpaw, floors and halts outclassed Juarez who does not come out for the fourth. In a bout cut to six rounds local Kantun gets a draw with double world title challenger Soto with all officials scoring it 57-57.

Merida, Mexico: Light Welter: Silverio Ortiz (21-13) W PTS 12 Fernando Angulo (23-8). Good, tough fight. Local “Chamaco” Ortiz, 27, has experienced Ecuadorian, a former WBA lightweight title challenger, down in fifth and hurt again in twelfth. “La Fiera” also has his moments and it is close. Scores 116-111 twice and 114-113. Ortiz wins vacant IBA “world” title. Both fighters had lost 3 of their last 4 going in, that’s a world title fight these days.

May 2
Tirana, Albania: Middle: Kreshnik Qato (23-6) W PTS 12 Esteban Ponce (16-5-1,1ND ). British-based Albanian Qato, 31, retains WBFederation title with wide unanimous verdict over modest Argentinian. Eighteen wins in a row for Qato, but opposition nothing special. Ponce a 4-6 round fighter, not even rated in Argentinian 1st 10 at the weight.
