All aboard for Eric's whistle stop tour of the boxing globe.
November 17
Perth, Australia: Cruiser: Danny Green (31-3) W PTS 12 BJ Flores (24-1-1). Cruiser: Shane Cameron (26-2) W PTS 12 Anthony McCracken (13-5). Welter: Steve Wills (15-0-2) WPTS 6 Casey Gilmour (7-4-3). A different Danny Green as “The Green Machine” elects to box and counter punch challenger Flores.
Flores forces action, but is shaken at the end of the eighth by a combination. Continues to force the fight, but Green, 37, scores well on the back foot, and retains his IBO title for fourth time. Fight closer than the scores of 118-110, 118-111 and 117-112 make it seem, but Flores, 31, in his first fight since August 2009, could never quite catch up with Green.
In his second fight at cruiser “Mountain Warrior” Cameron wins unanimous decision over “The Bull” McCracken for vacant IBO Asia Pacific title. New Zealander cut over both eyes in a tough battle but wins on scores of 116-112 twice and 117-1137. Southpaw Wills, nicknamed “The Surgeon” was the one who was cut as he had to survive a cut over his left eye in outpointing lanky Gilmour. Wills wins on scores of 59-54 twice and 59-55.
November 18
Los Angeles, USA: Light Welter: Carlos Molina (14-0) W PTS 8 John Figueroa (7-8-3). Molina comprehensively outboxes late sub Figueroa. Dominates most of the way and is well on top in later rounds as Figueroa tires. Scores 79-72, 79-73, 78-74. Puerto Rican Figueroa,30, has lost six of his last seven but puts up a fight each time.
November 19
Tessala-El-Merdja, Algeria: Light Welter: Ali Chebah (35-1) W TKO 5 Ruben Cupe (1-6-1 ). No problems for Chebah in his last warm-up fight before facing Ajose Olusegun in a WBC eliminator. Halts poor Spaniard in fifth for win No 28 by KO/TKO.
San Juan, Argentina: Light Middle: Carlos Baldomir (46-13-6) W PTS 10 Amilcar Funes (22-10). Light: Marcelino Lopez (20-0) W KO 3 Jailer Berrio (19-8). Tougher than expected for “Tata”. The 39-year-old former WBC welterweight champion wins the early rounds, but then lets Funes take over before bouncing back with a strong finish. Split decision goes to Baldomir on scores of 99-93, 98-97 and 96.5-98. But did not look in good condition and made hard work of this win. Baldomir won the welter title from Zab Judah in 2006 and defended it against Arturo Gatti before losing to Floyd Mayweather later the same year. “Nino” Lopez,24, floors Colombian Berrio,23, three times on the way to a third round kayo win.
Malvern, Australia: Middle: Heath Ellis (13-2-1) W PTS 8 Benny Horra (9-17-2). “The Heat”, 22, eases back after kayo loss to Steve Maxwell in April. Takes unanimous decision over Horra, 38, for Victorian State title. Edmonton, Canada : Heavy : Ty Fields (44-2) W TKO 3 Ken Frank (3-1-1). Cruiser: Ryan Henney (16-3) W PTS 6 Taylor Bull (1-1). Predictable early win for 6’8” tall Fields over Albertan novice Frank. Scores knockdowns in second and third and fight stopped. Body punches do the damage. Southpaw “Big Sky” Fields, 35 , now has 40 wins by KO/TKO, but a 57 seconds kayo loss to Monte Barrett in 2008 is a better form guide. Canadian champion Henney, 33, has a struggle with novice Bull but wins unanimous decision on scores of 59-55 twice and 58-56.
Hamburg, Germany: Heavy: Ruslan Chagaev (27-1-1) W PTS 10 Travis Walker (34-6-1). Super Feather: Marcel Meyerdiercks (18-0) W PTS 10 Philippe Frenois (12-2-1).Heavy: Denis Boystov (28-0-0) W KO 2 Mike Sheppard (15-12-1). Cruiser : Rakhim Chakhkiev (7-0) W KO 1 Chris Thomas (17-15-2). Middle: Jack Culcay (7-0) W PTS 8 Alexey Ribchev (6-2). Heavy: Manuel Charr (15-0) W TKO 5 Robert Hawkins (23-16). Light Heavy: Karoly Balzsay (23-2) W KO 4 Misa Nikolic (6-9). Surprise as WBA mandatory challenger Chagaev has to go the distance against “Freight Train” Walker. Chagaev “ The White Tyson” always just a bit busier, but Uzbek southpaw,32, not impressive. Walker losses for the third time in a row and five of his six losses have been by KO/TKO. Scores 78-75, 77-75 and 77-76. If the officials had scored one round differently Walker would have got a draw. Nothing to frighten David Haye in this performance by Chagaev.
As usual Meyerdiercks, 23, goes the distance for a win. Frenchman Frenois always in the fight and keeps it close against clever German. Scores 98-92, 97-95 and 96-94. Only five wins inside the distance for Meyerdiercks. Frenois, 25, had lost two of his last three, but close verdicts in the other man’s backyard.
WBC No 3 Boystov returns from injury lay-off and floors poor Sheppard four times. Russian Boystov,24, now has 23 wins by KO/TKO after turning pro at the age of 18. Russian southpaw Chakhkiev, 27, an Olympic gold and world championships silver medalist, kayos poor Thomas with a body shot at the end of the first round. Six losses in a row for Thomas. Once again “Golden Jack” gives an impressive display of speed and accuracy as he takes a unanimous verdict over aggressive Bulgarian. Ecuadorian-born German, a world amateur champion, Culcay, 25 , won on scores of 78-74 twice and 79-72. Rough tough match sees Charr outslugging Hawkins,40, who retires in his corner at the end of round five. Syrian-born Charr, 27, getting his career back into gear after a spell in jail in 2008. Six losses in a row for experienced Hawkins. Former WBO super middle champ Balzsay takes his time before kayoing Serbian Nikolic in fourth. Second win for Hungarian since losing his WBO title to Stieglitz and a defeat by Eduard Gutknecht in 2009.
Tlalnepantla, Mexico: Light Fly: Luis Ceja (16-1-3) W TKO 8 Ronald Ramos (29-9-2). Big win for prospect Ceja as Colombian retires on his stool and does not answer the bell for the ninth round. Ramos, with height and reach advantage shows good defensive moves. However, all-out aggression from “Gallo” Ceja,20, wears Ramos down. Colombian deducted points in seventh for use of the head and eighth for rough tactics as he tries to stem the tide. Ceja now unbeaten in his last twelve, and retains WBC Fecarbox title. Ramos, had lost to Julio Cesar Miranda for the WBO flyweight title in September.
Kiev, Ukraine: Light Welter: Viktor Postol (12-0) W KO 4 Jahongir Abdullayev (18-5). Cruiser: Dymtro Kucher (11-0) W TKO 3 Kim Jenssen (10-4). Controversial win for lanky 26-year-old Postol. Dominates from the start and has Kyrgyzstan fighter under pressure. Floors Abdullayev twice in fourth, but the last one included a punch when Abdullayev was on his knees. Referee counted, but Abdullayev got up and walked back to his corner in protest, and was counted out. Kucher impressive. Ukrainian floors Norwegian in second and puts him down with heavy right in third. Jenssen gets up but in no condition to fight on.
Miami, USA: Middle: Ermosele Albert (23-4-1) W TKO 9 Joaquin Zamora (18-3-1). In his first fight for over a year Nigerian “Bad Boy” Albert wins vacant IBO Latino title as Zamora finally succumbs to a number of cuts caused by accidental head clashes. Zamora, 33, had also been inactive, his last fight being in June 2009, when he was on an unbeaten run of 13 fights.
Chicago, USA: Light Heavy: Andrzej Fonfara (15-2,1ND) W KO 1 Tony Doughty (9-2). Light Heavy: Sergey Kovalev (11-0) W TKO 2 Dallas Vargas (22-6). Light Welter :Ivan Popoca (15-0-1) W PTS 8 Martin Tucker (7-7). Light Middle : Donatos Bondoravas (10-1-1) W PTS 8 Mustafa Johnson (8-9-1).All over in 23 seconds as a right from Pole Fonfara, the WBC Youth champion, puts Doughty out cold. Russian Kovalev halts sliding “Deaf Pride” Vargas,33, in two rounds. Kovalev,23, has ten wins by KO/TKO. Mexican Popoca has trouble with Tucker. Popoca, 28, badly cut early but battles back to build a lead. Tucker comes on over the last two rounds and makes it close. Scores 78-74 twice and 77-75. Slick boxing of Johnson gives Lithuanian Bondoravas,31, trouble. Although he takes middle rounds working off his jab. loses a point in seventh for holding but still wins unanimous decision on scores of 78-73, 77-74 and a way out 79-72.
Atlantic City, USA: Farah Ennis (17-0) W TKO 7 Victor Lares (15-5). Heavy: Chazz Witherspoon (28-2) W TKO 4 Alexis Mejias (11-6). The “Quiet Storm” blows away game Texan Lares. Ennis takes his time and then explodes if fourth flooring Lares,33, and almost putting him down for a second time at the end of the round. Scores two more knockdowns in sixth and another in the seventh and the fight is stopped. Ennis, 27 makes it eleven by KO/TKO and wins vacant NABO title. Farah is the brother of light middle prospect Derek. Witherspoon,29, rebuilding after stoppage loss to Tony Thompson in December, scores second stoppage win as he overpowers Puerto Rican with constant pressure and has Mejias hurt and battered when the fight is stopped. Now 20 wins by KO/TKO for 6’4” “The Gentleman ”Witherspoon, but has lost the two big ones to Thompson and Chris Arreola. Mejias, 32, now lost five of his last six.
November 20
Atlantic City, USA: Sergio Martinez (46-2-2) W KO 2 Paul Williams (39-2). Heavy: Tony Thompson (35-2) W TKO 4 Paul Marinaccio (24-6-3). Middle : Fernando Guerrero (20-0) W TKO 4 Saul Duran (37-18-2 ). Light Heavy: Zsolt Erdei (32-0) W PTS 8 Samson Onyango (20-7). Feather: Luis Del Valle (11-0) W TKO 3 Noe Lopez Jr (6-7). Heavy: Steve Chambers (23-1-1) W PTS 8 Bryan Jargal (15-1-3). In an all-southpaw battle Argentinian Martinez springs a shock as he kayos “puncher” Williams with a left to the jaw in round two. The punch puts Williams, the former undefeated welterweight champion, face down for the count. The first round went to Williams as he finished the round strongly, but then came the hook from Sergio. Martinez, 35, retains his WBC title and gains revenge for majority decision loss to Williams in December. First defence for Martinez of the title he won by beating Kelly Pavlik in April.
Thompson 39, has “The Italian Hitman” Marinaccio, 43, in all sorts of trouble when the referee halts the fight in fourth. A sparring partner for David Haye in the preparation for his fight with Audley Harrison, Thompson would have made a much better opponent for the WBA champion. Thompson’s only loss in his last 31 fights was to Wladimir Klitschko for the WBO and IBF titles in 2008. First fight since February 2009 for southpaw Marinaccio.
Easy win for Guerrero, 24, as he floors Mexican veteran in second and again in fourth for stoppage. Now 16 by KO/TKO for Dominican. Duran, 37, lost to Stevie Johnston for the WBC lightweight title in 1997 and drew with Takinori Hatakeyama for the WBA super feather title in 1999, but now just a fat middleweight. Former undefeated WBO light heavyweight and WBC cruiserweight champion Erdei eases back after a year of inactivity. “Firebird” 36, takes wide unanimous verdict over limited 39-year-old Kenyan and wins on scores of 80-72 twice and 79-73. Onyango halted inside a round by Nat Cleverly last year in Commonwealth title fight. Pressure from Puerto Rican Del Valle,23, tells and he catches up with Mexican Lopez in third and scores two knockdowns before the referee rescues Lopez. Nine by KO/TKO for Del Valle, but Lopez only two wins in his last nine fights. Good eight rounder with Chambers building a lead. Jargal came back in the seventh, but Chambers took the last and the split decision. Scores 78-74,77-75 and 75-77.
Dresden, Germany: Super Middle: Robert Stieglitz (39-2) W PTS 12 Enrique Ornelas ( 30-7). Third successful defence of WBO title for Russian Stieglitz. He wins the early rounds by pressuring Mexican. Ornelas,30, finds some form and has a good seventh, hurting the champion, but Steiglitz,29, back in charge after that and wins comfortable unanimous victory on score of 117-111 from all three officials. Librado Andrade, the brother of Ornelas, had stopped Stieglitz in 2008. Between them the Ornelas/ Andrade brothers have now been unsuccessful in four world title shots. Ornelas lost on points to Bernard Hopkins in December.
Rio Gallegos, Argentina: Middle: Javier Maciel (18-1) W KO 3 Gaston Vega (11-3,1ND). After sampling a couple of rights from Vega in the first Maciel goes to work. Softens Vega up with body shots in the second and puts him down for the count with a left hook to the body in the third. “La Bestia”,26, goes to twelve by KO/TKO in first defence of his WBO Latino title. Sao Paulo, Brazil: Light Middle: Mike Oliveira (13-0) W KO 3 Junior Ramos (10-5). Heavy: George Arias (47-11) W DIS 10 Emilio Zarate (10-3-1). Highly touted Oliveira,20, has happy home-coming. In first fight back in his native Brazil he floors Dominican Ramos, 36, in the second and puts him down twice in third, the second time for the count. Now eleven by KO/TKO for “The Chairman of The Board” , but Ramos no real test. Arias, 36, retains South American title. Argentinian Zarate, 29, under constant pressure. Keeps spitting out his gum shield to get a breather. Finally does it once too often and referee disqualifies him in tenth. Arias lost to Johnny Nelson in a challenge for the WBO cruiserweight title in 2001. He rules at home, and has been Brazilian heavyweight champion since 1999.
Mississauga, Canada: Light: Logan McGuinness (13-0-1) W PTS 8 Adrian Verdugo (17-3-1). A tough test on paper, and so it proved. NABA champion McGuinness 23, has to overcome handicap of a cut under his left eye to box his way to victory by going forward and pressurising Mexican. Verdugo stands toe-to-toe with Canadian over last three rounds of great action. McGuinness deserved winner, but fight closer than scores of 80-72 twice and 79-73 suggest. No easy opponent for McGuinness as Mexican who had scored 14 wins by KO/TKO in his 17 victories.
Herning, Denmark: Super Middle: Rudy Markussen (35-2,1ND) W KO 1 Dejan Ribac (19-2). Light: Kim Poulsen (15-1) W PTS 8 Saber Gasmi (11-8-1). Cruiser: Serdar Sahin (18-0) W TKO 6 Lukas Schulz (8-1-0). Markussen, now 33, puts Libyan-born Serb down with a left and then twice more with body punches and it is all over in the first. Only the second fight in four years for the former undefeated European champion who lost to Sven Ottke for the IBF title in 2002. Ribac, 30, has built his record on poor opposition. Poulsen make it twelve wins in a row with wide unanimous verdict over Tunisian Gasmi. German champion Sahin,28, comes from behind to halt Pole Schultz.
Levallois-Perret, France: Middle: Julien-Marie Sainte (27-2) W TKO 3 Chris Karagoz (18-17-4). Heavy: Newfel Ouatah (7-0) W PTS 10 Cyril Leonet (3-5-2). Never a loser in Levallois-Perret, Sainte continued that run as he floors a defensive-minded Karagoz at the end of the second. Floors him again with a left hook in the third and the referee stops the fight. “The Brigadier”, 27 retains French title in his first defence and has won nine in a row since losing to Tyan Booth in Canada in March 2009. Tall Algerian born Ouatah,27, wins French title in his only his seventh fight and his first over ten rounds. Uses height and reach to build early lead over former stoppage victim Leonet, but then seems to tire and Leonet brawls his way back in. Scores 98-93, 97-93 and 96-94.
Monterrey, Mexico: Fly: Edgar Sosa (41-6) W PTS 12 Masafumi Okubo (18-4-1). Feather: Alberto Garza (23-4-1,1ND) W PTS 12 Justin Savi (24-1). Feather: Jhonny Gonzalez (47-7) W KO 2 Santos Marimon (13-13-1).Fly: Oscar Blanquet (24-3-1) W TKO 2 Carlos Rodriguez (17-8-4). Super Bantam: Giovanni Caro (21-8-4) W PTS 10 Felix Machado (25-13-1). Carlos Zarate Jr (11-0) W PTS 6 Jesus Cruz Bibiano (4-3). Classy display by former WBC light Fly Champ Sosa. Outboxes tough Japanese fighter who chooses to just walk into the punishment, particularly damaging hooks to the body. Okubo twice survives Doctors inspection of badly cut lip. Sosa come near to ending in eleventh, but Okubo keeps his record never being stopped and never being floored. First defence of his WBC International title for Sosa, 31, and third win since unlucky loss of his title to Rodel Mayol in November last year. Even better when you consider he was down with a throat infection at the beginning of the week. Scores 120-108, 119-109 and 118-110. Okubo, 30, had lost only one of his last eleven, but all he had here was courage.
A tough scrap between local boxer Garza, and Savi, 26 from Benin saw both end up battered and bloody. Savi was cut above his right eye and Garza suffered bad swelling around both eyes. They fought at a fast pace with “Kichis” Garza coming on strong in the closing stages, having Savi badly rocking in the ninth and eleventh rounds, to win the WBC Silver Belt on a unanimous decision. First loss for Savi who was defending his Silver Belt for the first time. Usual explosive Gonzalez showing, He takes two rounds to soften up Colombian and then finishes it with a left hook. “Ruso” Caro never in an easy fight and never in a dull one. Suffers bad gash on his forehead in the first round and another one later in the fight, as former IBF super fly champion Machado loses points in first and sixth for butts. Fighting through a curtain of blood Caro,27, wins unanimous decision. Eight wins in a row for “El Ruso”, but 38-year-old Machado has now lost eight in a row.
In an all-Mexican fight Blanquet,25, retains WBC Continental Americas title for fifth time as he floors Rodriguez twice and halts him min two. Now twelve wins in a row for Blanquet and 15 wins by KO/TKO. Young Zarate Jr, 22, given a hard fight by Bibiano but wins unanimous decision to remain undefeated.
Nysa, Poland: Cruiser: Pawel Kolodziej (27-0) W KO 3 John McClain (25-9-2). Welter: Rafal Jackiewicz (37-9-1) W PTS 8 Ronny McField (13-8-2,1ND). Cruiser: Tomasz Hutkowski (19-0-2) W KO 3 Antonio Quiganga (14-20-2,1ND). Easy for 6’5” cruiser Kolodziej. Floors defensive minded McClain twice in third and American’s corner throw in the towel. Now 16 by KO/TKO for 30-year-old Pole who wins WBC Baltic Silver Belt-by beating a 43-year-old American! Former undefeated European champion Jackiewicz, 33, given a good workout by tough Nicaraguan and wins unanimous verdict. Jackiewicz lost a majority decision to former victim Jan Zaveck for the IBF title in September. Hutkowski, 24,easily outclasses Quiganga and batters away until the referee takes pity on Portuguese fighter and stops it in third. Thirteen wins by KO/TKO for tall cruiser, but poor opposition.
Uncasville, USA: Welter: Paul Spadafora (44-0-1) W TKO 5 Alain Hernandez (18-9-2).Feather: Matt Remillard (23-0) W PTS 8 Oscar Cuero (13-4). Light. Light Welter: Danny O’Connor (14-0) W PTS 8 Beto Tapia (15-16-1). Former undefeated IBF lightweight champion Spadafora still trying to fight his way back into the money. Mexican Hernandez, 32, makes a fight of it, but body shots weaken him and he stay in his corner at the end of the fifth. Southpaw Spadafora, 35, was jailed in 2005 for shooting and wounding his girlfriend. “Sharp Shooter” Remillard has trouble with the head first style of late sub Cuero, but is too fast and accurate for Colombian. Wins unanimous verdict on scores of 80-72 twice and 79-73, but not impressive. O’Connor, another southpaw, outboxes experienced Mexican Tapia and jabs his way to unanimous decision. Scores 80-72 twice and 80-71. In 16 losses Tapia has only been beaten inside the distance once, which makes him good “opponent” material.
New York, USA: Cruiser: Elvir Muriqi (38-5) W PTS 10 Daniel Jacob (23-4-6). Super Middle: Will Rosinsky (13-0) W PTS 8 Yasin Rashid (7-1). “Kosovo Kid” Muriqi, 31, wins wide unanimous verdict over Judah. Southpaw Judah,33, the brother of Zab Judah, down twice, but both time it was ruled that he was floored by low blows. Muriqi in command from the start with his sharp jab and superior skills. Scores 99-90 twice and 100-90. Muriqi lost to Clinton Woods in an IBF eliminator in 2009. Judah has lost five of his last six. In an all-Brooklyn bout, former top amateur Rosinsky moves up to super middle and outpunches a tough Rashid to wins on scores of 80-72 twice and 78-74.
Thackerville, USA: Super Fly: Raul Martinez (28-1) W PTS 12 Rodrigo Guerrero (14-3-1). Middle: Matt Korobov (13-0) W PTS 8 Derrick Findley (17-4). Martinez finds a war coming his way from tough Mexican Guerrero. Better boxing gives Martinez the edge but can’t seem to discourage Mexican whilst suffering a bad gash under his left eye. Both scoring freely in great little war. Martinez,28, finally hurts Guerrero in ninth, but again Mexican fights back. Martinez has big eleventh and bosses his way through twelfth. Looks a clear but close winner, but split verdict given. Scores 115-113 twice for Martinez and a ridiculous 117-111 for Guerrero. “The Cobra” lost to Nonito Donaire in a shot at the IBF fly title in 2009. Southpaw Guerrero lost on points to Vic Darchinyan for WBC and WBA titles in March. This an eliminator for the IBF mandatory spot. Russian Korobov, 27, taken the distance again as he outscores modest Findley. Scores 78-74 from all three officials. Two of Findley’s losses were to Andre Ward and Andre Dirrell, so he has brave management.
November 21
East London, South Africa: Super Fly: Unathi Gqokoma (10-5-1) W TKO 10 Themba Joyi (10-2-1). Minor upset as Gqokoma halts champion Joyi to win South African title. Southpaw Gqokoma has the better start, but Joyi gets into the fight in the middle rounds as Gqokoma seems to tire. However, in tenth a right puts Joyi down and he is floored again and stopped.
