Behind The Results w/e 17th May 2010

Eric Armit goes 'Behind the Results' to give us the lowdown in his global boxing digest.

May 14 Santa Ynez, USA: Light Middle: Sergiy Dzinziruk (37-0) W TKO 10 Daniel Dawson (34-2). Cruiser: Lateef Kayode (12-0) W KO 2 Jose Luis Herrera (16-7).Welter: Vernon Paris (21-0,3ND) W PTS 8 Juan Santiago (12-4-1). Too easy for southpaw Dzinziruk as he dominates every round before halting game Australian in tenth to retain WBO title. Dawson had no answer to the champion’s right jab and it was almost a sparring session at times for the Ukrainian. First fight since November 2008 for 34-year-old Dzinziruk, who is now based in USA, and sixth title defence. Dawson, 32, first fight since in 15 months and not even rated by the WBO, but still gets title shot.

One big right hand from Nigerian prospect is all it takes as Kayode makes it eleven by KO/TKO, but Colombian now only two wins in his last 8 fights. “Iceman” Paris loses a point in the first for flooring his man with a low blow, lucky to avoid another point deduction in third, then has a real struggle to overcome substitute Santiago. With the help of strong last round Paris squeaks by on a split decision 76-75 twice and 74-77, but questions over his conditioning.

Primm, USA: Light Welter: Julio Diaz (37-6) W PTS 10 Herman Ngoudjo (18-4). Light: Dominic Salcido (18-2) W PTS 8 Memo Sanchez (11-1-1). Welter: Ravshan Hudaynazarov (12-0) W TKO 2 Gerardo Prieto (6-10-1). Important crossroads fight for both men. Former IBF light champ Diaz, coming off two losses, too fast and too much lateral movement for plodding Ngoudjo. Diaz, 30, wins unanimous verdict over 30-year-old from Cameroon, who has had two unsuccessful shots at IBF title. Scores 99-91 and 97-93 twice. Ngoudjo reportedly suffered a fractured jaw and orbital socket bone during the fight.

Salcido, badly needing a win after two stoppage losses in his last three bouts was the aggressor and staged the stronger finish to take a unanimous decision over previously unbeaten southpaw Sanchez. Scores 78-74 and 77-75 twice. Uzbek Hudaynazarov makes it ten by KO/TKO as he stops late sub Prieto with body punch. Prieto has now lost his last five.

Melbourne, Australia: Middle: Johannes Mwetupunga (8-2) W PTS 10 Bill Hadlow (7-18-4). Welter: Wale Omotoso (17-0) W KO 4 Kiatchai Singwancha (29-8).Namibian, Mwetupunga, 33, has too much skill for Hadlow and reverses 2008 loss. Has Hadlow hurt in ninth and takes wide unanimous verdict on scores of 99-91, 97-93 and 97 94. Hadlow, 35, has lost 7 of his last 8 fights.

Even fight for three rounds and then a right from Nigerian ends it. 16 wins by KO/TKO for 25-year-old Omotoso and his ninth inside the distance win in a row. Wins vacant IBF Pan Pacific title but Thai southpaw, a former WBF light middle champ, with the curious nickname of Ice Jellybaby, failed to make the weight, probably had too many Jellybabies.

Mexico City, Mexico: Super Bantam: Jesus Ruiz (22-2-2) W PTS 12 Cuauhtemoc Vargas (15-3-1). Ruiz, 20, given a hard battle by Vargas who was having his first fight since losing Juan Manuel Lopez in January 2007. Ruiz starts better; Vargas comes on strong in middle rounds, then the youngster from Nogales sweeps later rounds with his better boxing. Ruiz, a former Mexican bantamweight champion wins interim WBC Latino title.

Pilar, Argentina: Heavy: Fabio Moli (41-8,2ND) W TKO 3 Emilio Zarate (8-1-1). Too easy for 40-year-old Moli. “The Mole” hurts local novice Zarate in first, forces a standing eight count in second and after he floors Zarate in third the referee stops the fight.

Liege, Belgium: Stephane Jamoye (18-0) W KO 1 Peter Balaz (1-18,1ND). Rubbish match as European Union & WBC Youth champ kayos poor Slovakian in 29 seconds. That’s 21 losses in a row for 35-year-old Balaz.

Entre Rios, Argentina: Super Bantam: Sergio Santillan (25-11-3) W KO 2 Darli Goncalves Pires (19-9-1). One right from Santillan and it is over for Brazilian. The former Argentinian and South American super fly champ wins vacant South American super bantam title.

Johannesburg, South Africa: Super bantam: McBute Sinyabi (14-1) W TKO 6 Themba Lesiba (9-1-1). Tougher than expected fourth defence of South African title for 23-year-old Sinyabi. He is floored in second, but puts challenger Lesiba down in third. They fight on equal terms until the sixth when Sinyabi scores two knockdowns and Lesiba’s corner throw in the towel. All of Sinyabi’s wins have come by KO/TKO, and as his single loss, so none of his fights have gone the distance.

Kissimmee, USA: Light Middle: Saul Duran (37-13-2) W PTS 10 Hector Camacho (79-6-3). Mexican Duran pulls off a minor upset as he is just too busy for a lethargic Camacho. “Baby” Duran, 37, ( Baby !!!!), who challenged Stevie Johnston for the IBF light title in 1997 was having his first fight since November 2008. Camacho, 48, having only his third fight in five years, fought like a 48-year-old.

Thailand: Super Bantam: Sod Kokietgym (44-2-1) W PTS 12 Adonis Aguelo (12-2-1). Super Feather: Terdsak (39-3-1) W PTS 12 Ricky Sasmundo (11-6-1). Strawweight: Pigmy(40-5-2) W PTS 6 Miguel Rodriguez (7-20). Southpaw Sod (he has changed his sponsor, so changed his name from Looknongyantoy) given a good argument by Filipino in all-action contest but retains WBO Asia Pacific title for seventh time on scores of 117-111 for all officials. Sod, 32, now unbeaten in 17 fights since first round loss to Daniel Ponce De Leon for WBO title in 2006.

Terdsak in bloody clash with late sub Sasmundo. Filipino loses point after clash of heads, but is then cut himself in another clash of heads, but no deduction for Thai. Terdsak, a 28-year-old southpaw winner on unanimous verdict 116-111 twice and 115-112. Terdsak retains WBO Orient title. His losses have been to Joan Guzman, Juan Manuel Marquez and Steve Luevano in title fights.

World rated Pygmy catches another tough Filipino but wins clear decision. The Thai is unbeaten in his last 29 bouts, but very poor opposition.

New York, USA: Light: Adrien Boner (15-0) W TKO 1 Rafael Lora (11-3). “The Problem” Broner, 20, shows class as he dominates from the bell and drops Dominican Lora near the end of the round. Lora makes it to his feet but is in condition to continue. Now 11 by KO/TKO for Broner, six in the first round.

May 15 New York, USA: Light Welter: Amir Khan (23-1) W TKO 11 Paul Malignaggi (27-4). Light Welter: Victor Ortiz (27-2-1) W PTS 10 Nate Campbell (33-6-1,1ND). Middle: Daniel Jacobs (20-0) W TKO 2 Juan Astorga (14-5-1).Welter: Breidis Prescott (22-2) W TKO 3 Jason Davis (11-7-1). Impressive display by Khan, who wins every round before referee rescues Malignaggi in eleventh. With height and reach advantages Khan’s dominating jab, accurate right, and sheer speed were too much for the former IBF champ. Khan, 23, retains real WBA title for second time and now has 17 by KO/TKO. Malignaggi, 29, only other stoppage loss was to Ricky Hatton, also in eleven rounds , but “Magic Man” has now won only two of his last five fights.

Younger, faster, Ortiz boxes on the outside and handles veteran Campbell with ease. Southpaw Ortiz scores flash knockdown in first and wins wide unanimous decision on scores of 100-89 twice and 99-90 over former IBF, WBA and WBO light champ. Ortiz was halted by Marcos Maidana in six rounds for the interim WBA title in September. Khan and Ortiz met as amateurs in 2003 and Khan stopped Ortiz in two rounds.

Total mismatch as 23-year-old “The Golden Child” Jacobs scores four knockdowns on the way to second round stoppage of outclassed Mexican to win vacant NABF and retain NABO titles. Seventeen by KO/TKO for Jacobs. Astorga had been kayoed in one round by John Duddy in January.

Prescott outclasses poor Canadian and floors him twice with body shots. Prescott has beaten Amir Khan but lost to Kevin Mitchell. Six losses in a row for Davis.

Lodz, Poland: Cruiser: Krzys Wlodarczyk (43-2-1) W TKO 8 Giacobbe Fragomeni (26-3-1). Cruiser: Lukasz Janik (19-1) W KO 4 Mike De Meo(11-4). Light Middle: Damian Jonak (27-0-1)W TKO 1 Turgay Uzun (31-15-2) . Heavy: Andrzej Wawrzyk (19-0) W PTS 8 Paul Butlin (12-11). Welter: Felix Lora (12-6-4) W PTS 8 Krzys Cieslak (15-1) Former IBF champ Wlodarczyk wins vacant WBC title as he proves too young and strong for 40-year-old former champ Fragomeni. After four rounds open scoring has 28-year-old “Diablo” in front on two cards and level on third. At the end of the sixth Pole floors Italian with right. Fragomeni survives and comes back in seventh, but in eighth Wlodarczyk scores another knockdown. Fragomeni beats the count but follow-up barrage brings stoppage.

After comfortably winning first three rounds Janik finds right to put outclassed Italian out. Wawrzyk outboxes game British opponent and wins every round but can’t find finishing punch. Big upset win for Dominican Lora as he trades knockdowns with previously unbeaten Pole and does enough to deserve majority verdict. Scores 78-75, 76-75 and 75-75

Los Mochis,Mexico: Light: Humberto Soto (52-7-2,1ND) W PTS 12 Ricardo Dominguez (31-6-2). Super Feather: Humberto Gutierrez (27-2-1) W TKO 6 Rafael Cobos (11-4-2 ). Super Feather: Joksan Hernandez (20-2) W TKO 9 Daniel Ruiz (18-3). Feather: Roberto Marroquin (14-0 ) W KO 2 Arturo Camargo (22-15-2). Slow start by Soto, even being rocked in second. However, from then it is one-sided. Dominguez, 24, badly cut but holds out to go the distance. Scores 118-110, 119-110 and 117-112. First defence of his WBC title for “La Zorrita”.

First fight for 21-year-old Gutierrez since losing for WBC interim title to Vitali Tajbert in November. Hits too hard for Cobos and floors and halts him in six. Hernandez, 23, takes a couple of rounds to get going. Almost has Ruiz out in fifth then keeps pressure on until referee stops it.

Prospect Marroquin destroys Camargo with a knockdown in first and further two knockdowns in second.. Now 11 by KO/TKO for 20-year-old southpaw from Texas.

Ciudad Obregon, Mexico: Feather: Orlando Salido (34-10-2,1ND) W PTS 12 Crstobal Cruz (39-12-2,1ND) . “Siri” Salido looking for revenge and an early finish and floors champion Cruz twice in second round. Cruz,32. gets back into fight but Salido sticks to his boxing and despite cuts dominates again from the ninth to win unanimous verdict.. Salido beat Roberto Guerrero for the IBF title in 2006 but tested positive for steroids and was stripped of the title. This was the fourth defence for “”Lacandon” who won the vacant title with a split verdict over Salido in 2008.

Buenos Aires, Argentina: Super Fly: Omar Narvaez (32-0-2) W PTS 12 Evert Briceno (32-6-1). Middle: Jorge Sebastian Heiland (16-0) W PTS 10 Alejandro Falliga (17-7-3,1ND). Light Welter: Claudio Olmedo (18-2,1ND) W RTD 8 Carlos Ahumada (15-2,1ND). Middle: Bill Godoy (16-0) W PTS 10 Cris Rios (6-5-1). Southpaw Narvaez wins vacant WBO title in rough match with Nicaraguan. Argentinian, former undefeated WBO fly champion, always too busy for modest Briceno who is deducted points in fifth, eighth and eleventh rounds for headwork. Narvaez, 34, also cut by butt in last round but sweeps last four rounds to win on scores of 117-108 twice and 118-107. Becomes only fourth Argentinian to win title in two divisions.

Heiland has to climb off the floor in the first. Goes on to dominate from there and referee gives Falliga a standing count in the ninth. Scores 98-90, 98-91 and 96-92 as 23-year-old southpaw retains WBC Latino title.

“El Pumita” Olmedo retains interim WBA Latino title as he scores two knockdowns in third. Referee deducts a point for Ahumada constantly spitting out gum shield before Ahumada retires in eighth. Ahumada’s South American title not on line. All of Olmeda’s wins have been by KO/TKO.

Godoy, 23, in command until right eye starts to close then it is a struggle but he wins vacant WBC Fecarbox title on scores of 96-94 for all three officials.

Ciudad Del Carmen, Mexico: Featherweight: Jhonny Gonzalez (44-7) W KO 2 Jean Javier Sotelo (22-8-2). Quiet night until Gonzalez , 28, cut in clash of heads in second round after which the former WBO bantam champion puts Colombian away with a left hook. No 38 by KO/TKO for Jhonny.

Leganes, Spain: Light Heavy: Gabriel Campillo (20-3,1ND) W TKO 1 Luzimar Gonzaga (28-6). Fly: Silvio Olteanu (11-3) W PTS 12 Bernard Inom (20-2-1 ). Super Feather: Sergio Palomo (22-4) W TKO 4 Oscar Sanchez (31-4-2). No trouble for former WBA champion Campillo as he wipes out Brazilian in first.

Big win for Spanish-based Romanian Olteanu as his skill and power are too much for 36-year-old French former European champ and WBO title challenger Inom. Eleven wins in a row for former top amateur Olteanu, who lost his first three fights as a pro.

Palomo, 33, always in control against 33-year-old Sanchez and halts him in fourth to win vacant Spanish title. Show was to honour Francisco Javier Castillo former WBC light middle and WBA middle champ.

Brampton, Canada: Bantam: Jose Silveira (11-2) W TEC DEC 4 Andy Singh Kooner (10-3). Silveria has good second round and shakes Kooner. Kooner, 31, too badly cut on nose to continue, and as two judges have Mexican in front 39-37, 39-37 and one has it 38-38, technical decision goes to Silveira. This for the vacant NABA title.

Herning, Denmark: Light Heavy: Rudy Markussen (34-2,1ND) W TKO 6 Chris Karagoz (18-16-4). Easy comeback win for Markussen as he floors Frenchman with body shot in first and has him under pressure in sixth when referee steps in. First fight since shock loss to Sergey Tatevosyan in October 2006 for 32-year-old former European champ.

Cebu City, Philippines: Light: Anthony Marcial (17-1) W TKO 4 Dante Paulino (14-10-2). “Rocky” Marcial, 30, going all-out for stoppage from first bell finally overwhelms modest Paulino in fourth to win vacant WBO Oriental title. Now 15 by KO/TKO for southpaw Marcial.

May 16 Hilversum, Holland: Super Feather: Antonio Joao Bento (22-8-2) W KO 10 Innocent Anyanwu (20-1-2). Ah the best laid plans….After much searching Bento was selected as the victim as 27-year-old Nigerian born Anyanwu to collected the vacant European Boxing Association title (WBA version of European title). The 33-year-old from Portugal did not read the scrip and instead kayoed a tiring Anyanwu in the tenth and busted his 22 fight unbeaten streak. Bento finally a champion of sorts after having lost previously in three shots at the EBU title and twice for the EU title.

May 17 Saitama, Japan: Super Feather: Takashi Uchiyama(15-0) W TKO 6 Angel Granados (18-9). Easy first defence of his WBA title for Uchiyama as he stalks 5” taller Venezuelan and catches up in the sixth. A right puts 35-year-old Granados face down and referee stops the fight. Granados qualified for the title shot by losing for the interim title!
