Behind the Results w/c January 22

Eric Armit goes 'Behind The Results' to give us the stories behind the statistics in his weekly global boxing digest...

January 22

Ontario, USA: Light Welter: Patrick Lopez (18-2) W PTS 8 John Brown (24-17-2, 1ND). Light Welter: Hector Serrano (11-0) W PTS 6 Cris Favela (17-24-6).

Poor fight as 41-year-old Brown too defensive. Venezuelan southpaw Lopez scores knockdown in last and wins wide unanimous verdict over former IBF super feather challenger. Prospect Serrano also unimpressive but wins unanimous decision.

Halifax, Canada: Feather: Tyson Cave (10-0) W PTS 8 Robert DaLuz (12-24-3).

Former top amateur and now Canadian super bantam champ, southpaw Cave takes unanimous decision on scores of 78-74 twice and 79-73 over journeyman DaLuz. Cave won gold at the 2005 Multi-Nations in Liverpool, but lost to Les Ballard and Steve Smith in International matches.

Aulnay-sous-Bois, France: Super Middle: Mahedi Bouadla (19-3) W T KO 5 Francisco Mora (55-16-1). Middle: Julien Marie Sainte (24-2) W KO 2 Gordon Glisic (6-6-1).

Bouadla, the French champion, uses great jab to wear down Mora and hurts him with an uppercut in fifth and Argentinian corner throws in the sponge. “Brigadier” Sainte, warms up for shot at French title as he puts away poor Croat Glisic with a right in second. Mora was a wide points loser here to Robin Reid for the WBF title back in 2002

Bloemfontein, South Africa: Cruiser: Thabiso Mchunu (8-0) W TKO 4 Ruben Groenewald (23-8-3). Bantam: Bongani Mahlangu (12-2) W KO 1 Asamoah Wilson. Straw: Gideon Buthelezi (9-2) W TKO 4 Nelson Mtshali (6-2).

Twenty-one-year-old southpaw Mchunu retains South African and WBA Pan African titles as he lets veteran Groenewald blow himself out and then batters and halts him in fourth. Groenewald, originally a light middle, won and lost the WBU middleweight title in fights with Anthony Farnell, and was halted in five rounds by Carl Froch for the Commonwealth super middle title in the 13 fights he had here between 2000 and 2008.

“Dancing Shoes” Mahlangu flattens poor Ghanaian Asamoah Wilson in 51 seconds for WBA Pan African title. Wilson was halted in six rounds by Don Broadhurst in a Commonwealth super fly title challenge last April. In all-southpaw battle, Buthelezi does well to halt Mtshali and win vacant WBO Africa title.

New York: Feather: Juan Manuel Lopez (28-0) W TKO 7 Steve Luevano (37-2-1): Feather: Yuriorkis Gamboa (17-0) W TKO 2 Rogers Mtagwa (26-14-2,1ND).Middle: John Duddy (28-1) W TKO 1 Juan Astorga (14-4-1, 1ND). Light Middle: Pawel Wolak (26-1) W PTS 8 Ishmail Arvin (15-2-4). Cruiser: Carlos Negron (7-0) W PTS 6 Garret Wilson (7-3) .Light Heavy: Will Rosinsky (10-0) W PTS 6 Markus Gonzales (7-3). Feather: Jorge Diaz (12-0) W KO 1 Tommy Atencio (4-4).

Lopez, moving up from super bantam, was the aggressor with Luevano boxing on the retreat to avoid the bombs of the Puerto Rican. Lopez finally got through with an uppercut early in the seventh and then put Luevano down with a right and a southpaw left. Luevano beat the count but was in a bad way and the fight was stopped. Lopez wins the WBO feather title. This was Luevano’s sixth defence since winning the vacant title with a kayo of Nick Cook back in 2007.

Gamboa just too fast and hits too hard for normally durable Tanzanian, scoring flash knockdown at the end of the first and putting Mtagwa down twice in the second for a stoppage to retain his WBA interim title. Impressive as Mtagwa went the distance with Lopez and had him badly hurt in the last two rounds, but Mtagwa his own worst enemy as he walks forward into bombs. Bob Arum will now build towards a showdown later this year.

Duddy takes only 115 seconds and two punches for victory. Wolak wins unanimous verdict on scores of 80-72 and 79-73 twice. Prospects Negron, Rosinsky and Diaz all win.

Pasay City, Philippines: Light Fly: Carlos Tamara (21-4) W TKO 12 Brain Viloria (26-3, 2 NC). Light Fly: Donnie Nietes (26-1-3) W TKO 10 Jesus Silvestre (15-2). Light: Jason Pagara (21-1) W PTS 10 Eddy Comaro (22-7-5). Light: Jimrex Jaca (29-6-3) W KO 4 Ramadhan Weriu (13-3-1). Welter: Dennis Laurente (33-3-5) W TKO 2 Laimangkorn Chuwatana.

Viloria wins early rounds hurting the Colombian with body shots, but “Olympio” Tamara keeps coming as champ tires. Viloria ahead on two cards, but has nothing left in last. Champ falls to the canvas twice when missing with swipes and is easy target for volley of 14 unanswered punches and halted. Tamara wins IBF title. Viloria collapses in dressing room and is taken to hospital but passes medical checks and is detained for rest.

IBF straw champ Nietes struggles to make 107lbs for non title fight. Floors Mexican in first and keeps up pressure, but Mexican gives him plenty of trouble. A hard left hook sees Silvestre spit out mouthpiece in tenth and refuse to replace it leading to stoppage. Filipino champ Pagara starts slowly, has tough scrap with Indonesian and just edges it on majority decision with two scores of 96-94 and a 95-95.

Southpaw left hook and right uppercut from rusty Jaca finish Weriu in fifth.

Cuxhaven, Germany: Heavy: Yakup Saglam (24-0) W TKO 2 Yuri Lunev (5-12). Super Middle: Mahir Oral (27-2-2) W PTS 8 Fabio Liggieri (11-5-4). Heavy: Konstantin Airich (13-2-2) DREW 8 Alexey Mazkin (13-4-2). Heavy: Ondrej Pala (26-2) W PTS 8 Robert Hawkins (23-14). Light Welter: Felix Diaz (4-0) W KO 3 Bronislav Kubin (9-2). Middle: Christian Pawlak (15-3) W KO 1 Denis Sirjatovs (3-16-1). Cruiser: Jaromir Soukup (19-1) W KO 4 Florian Strupits (2-12).

Too easy for Turkish-born Saglam as he stops Russian southpaw. Oral starts fast and then fades under pressure from tough Italian. However cleaner punching gives him the edge as he takes majority verdict on scores of 78-77 twice and 76-76.

Airich and Mazkin draw again. But Mazkin, badly cut and losing two points for low blows, looks unlucky. Scores 77-75 for Airich and two scores of 76-76. Airich stopped by Danny Williams in 2008.Pala, who beat Henry Akinwande back in 2008, unimpressive in plodding unanimous points win over veteran Hawkins.

Dominican southpaw Diaz, a gold medal winner in Beijing, floors Kubin in second and referee stops it in third after Czech down twice more. Rubbish matches see Pawlak and Czech Soukup kayo poor Latvian opposition. Sirjatovs turned pro here and lost his first twelve fights in a row.

Zinacantepec, Mexico: Super Feather: Gamaliel Diaz (25-9-2) W PTS 12 Jorge Perez (10-6-1,1ND). Super Bantam: Mario Macias (18-4) W PTS 10 Eduardo Zaragoza.

A rough night for Diaz as Perez loses points for a head butt and low punches. Diaz wins WBC CABOFE title on scores of 119-109, 118-110 and 115-112. Switch-hitter Macias uses body attack to take unanimous decision.

Cavaria on Premezzo, Italy: Welter: Antonio Lauri (32-4-3) W TKO 2 Ferenc Szabo (13-12-2).

Too easy for Lauri over soft-chinned Hungarian. Szabo has losses to Paul Hyland, Harry Ramogoadi and Paul Appleby.

Mar del Plata, Argentina: Light Middle: Diego Chaves (13-0) W TKO 4 Daniel Saboia (8-2-1). Fly: Luis Lazarte (46-9-1,1ND) W PTS 10 Raul Medina (25-10-3).

Former top amateur Chaves, now twelve inside the distance, wins WBO Latino title as he floors Brazilian in third and again in fourth to force stoppage. “El Mosquito” Lazarte, now 38, retains WBC Mundo Hispano title. Medina badly cut in second as Lazarte takes over. Scores 100-90, 100-91 and 99-93 don’t reflect how good the fight was.

Juarez, Mexico: Feather: Eduardo Lazcano (18-1) W TKO 5 Cristian Lopez (14-3-1). Light: Mauro Lucero (45-13-1) W KO 1 Joel Juarez (23-8-1).

Poor fight sees southpaw “Chucky” Lazcano easily on top and Lopez pull out at the bell for the fifth with a hand injury. Former double national champ Lucero, now 37, floors Juarez four times for quick kayo. It is always this way with Juarez as 30 of his 32 fights have ended inside the distance.

Nairobi, Kenya: Bantam: Nick Otieno (20-4) W TKO 4 Gabriel Ochieng (2-1). Super Feather: David Kiilu (32-10-2) W KO 2 Stephen Njuguna (0-8). Heavy: Ray Ochineg (20-9-3) W KO 1 Robert Ochung (0-8). Light Welter: James Kimori (14-3) W TKO 3 Suleiman Ismail (0-3). Light Heavy: Douglas Otieno (21-3) W PTS 4 Pat Amoti (0-1).

Favourites all win in poor matches. Douglas Otieno kayoed in four rounds by Nathan Cleverly for the Commonwealth light-heavyweight title in December 2008 and Kiilu a loser here to Nick Cook, Rendall Munroe and Choi Tseveenpurev.

Nadi, Fiji: Light Welter: Junior Farzan (23-5-1) W TKO 6 Waisale Ratu (6-10-4).

Fijian No 1 Farzan kayos Ratu in six. Farzan retain Fijian title with his third win in seven months over Ratu.

January 25

Tokyo, Japan: Bantam: Kinshiro Usui (19-2) W TKO 2 Davide Kitamura (6-8).

Easy for Usui who overwhelms poor opponent scoring two-punch knockdown at start of second and forcing finish.
