WBO No 1 Melindo, who turned pro at 17, floors tough Californian in first but is made to fight all the way and staggered in the last before winning close unanimous decision. Laredo, USA: Juan Carlos Burgos (24-0) W TKO 12 Juan Carlos Martinez (17-12-1). Light Middle: Demetrius Andrade (9-0) W KO 1 Bernardo Guereca (15-10-1). Mismatch sees former world amateur champion Andrade halt poor Guereca in just 78 seconds.
Tokyo, Japan: Light: Takeo Shimada (24-5-1) W PTS 10 Alexis Salinas (11-4-2). Shimada, 38, and a former WBA secondary title challenger, has just too much skill for tough Mexican and jabs his way to a unanimous decision on scores of 99-93, 97-93 and 97-94.
Nakhon Sawan, Thailand: Bantam: Medgoen (64-6) W TKO 2 Amnart Patanakan Gym(6-1). Fly: Panomroonglek (28-0) W KO 2 Ego Yohan. Too easy for experienced Thai’s as they brush aside awful Indonesian victims.

(Bantam: Tomoki Kameda (12-0) W KO 3 Rodolfo Garay (26-17-1). Rubio, in trouble from uppercuts in rounds three and five and behind on two cards, finally finds the punch in the ninth to halt Alvarez. A loser in nine rounds against Kelly Pavlik for the WBC and WBO titles last February, Rubio retains WBC Latin title and now hopes to land eliminator with No 1 Gennady Golovkin for WBC challenger slot. “Pantera” Sagulian stays unbeaten with unanimous decision. No knockdowns, scores 97-95, 97-93 and 96-94 . Mexican reports give Saguilan’s record as 21-1-2 and Osorio as now 20-3-2? “Mexicanito” Kameda, brother of WBC fly champion Koki Kameda, floors Garay in second and ends it with body punches in third to win WBC Fecarbox title.

Upset as former national champion Migaki floors veteran southpaw Nagashima twice and stops him in tenth to win OPBF title. Nagashima recovers well from flooring in fourth and is slightly ahead before stoppage. Nakamori pushed all the way in a tough fight and just gets by on score of 77-76 from the officials.

Palma de Mallorca, Spain: Light: Hoang Sang Nguyen (25-5-1) W PTS 12 Rudy Encarnacion (20-17-2). Vietnamese-born Spaniard wins vacant European Union title with clear points win over Dominican-born Encarnacion.
January 17
Cebu City, Philippines: Fly: Rocky Fuentes (24-7-2) W TKO 3 Pit Anacaya (6-7-2). Easy for national champ Fuentes in non-title fight as he chases Anacaya until third and then catches up in neutral corner and floors and halts him.
