Baker answers Chisora SOS

Carl ‘The Fridge’ Baker has agreed to face Derek Chisora in an eliminator for the British heavyweight title at Wembley Arena on 13 February to end a confusing merry-go-round in the domestic heavyweight division.

The unbeaten Chisora, 11-0 (6), has been searching for an opponent since his British heavyweight title challenge to Danny Williams was shelved after Williams (pictured right, with Baker) pulled out with a viral infection last week.

Chisora was originally slated to face Matt Skelton on Frank Warren’s Wembley bill but was offered a British title shot when Danny Williams’ duel title clash with Commonwealth holder Sam Sexton was postponed after Sexton injured his hand. Skelton subsequently took on prospect Kubrat Pulev in Germany at the weekend and was stopped in four rounds, ruling out the possibility of his meeting with Chisora being resurrected for the 13th.

‘Del Boy’ then invited Tyson Fury to face him at Wembley Arena in response to Fury’s £10,000 challenge in Friday’s Boxing News to any domestic heavyweight who could floor him in sparring. The two camps were unable to agree terms though and Fury will now have his next two fights in America.

Still with me?

Enter stage left Baker. The 21st slugger sprang to prominence in October’s Prizefighter tournament with his shock quarter-final points win over Danny Williams. The Sheffield man-mountain dropped Williams twice in the opener but had to cling on when Williams mounted a strong surge in the final round. Baker still appeared fatigued from his earlier exertions and was comfortably decisioned by Coleman Barrett in the Prizefighter semi.

Baker’s portly appearance is somewhat deceptive. The 28-year-old possesses talent, decent hand speed and a fair wallop, but is prone to lapses in concentration (and indeed motivation). He has nine wins from his 13 contests and represents a decent test for the outspoken Chisora.
