Andrew Cain crowned ABA Golden Gloves Champion

Everton Red Triangle’s Andrew Cain was crowned National Champion following the ABA National Golden Gloves finals at Brentwood Essex on Saturday 6th March. Andrew and fellow club mate Peter McGrail were the fighters to watch throughout the whole tournament, enthralling spectators all over the country with their skill, heart and firepower.

Coach Michael Stevenson recalls: ‘The boys started their training programme for this tournament on a windy beach on Boxing Day morning. Whilst most kids of their age were playing with their toys, these lads were in hard training. That’s dedication.’

The 36kg final saw Cain pitted against Kingfisher’s Henry Potter.  They were the last two fighters standing after 40 entrants nationwide entered at this weight in January. Cain started fast, firing combinations to the head and body of Potter.  The score was 4-1 to Cain after round one but could have been much wider, such was his dominance. Potter fought back well in round two but Cain was too good in all areas, and wasn’t about to let his chance at glory slip by.  Cain continued to pressure Potter over rounds 2 and 3 and came out a well deserved points winner.  Cain’s ring generalship and boxing skills were simply much superior.  He is definitely one to watch for the future.

Cain boxed every round of this Championship, a total of five victories on the run against the best fighters in the country. This is his first national title and he goes on to represent England in the upcoming Tri Nations tournament.
