Good news as Jason Rushton on the mend
Steve Wood, who co-promoted the show at the Bolton Arena last Friday at which Jason Rushton collapsed and was subsequently hospitalised, says that the popular Doncaster light-middleweight is thankfully on the mend.
26-year-old Rushton, known as 'The Rocket' was stopped with only one second remaining of a gruelling contest against unbeaten Blackpool prospect Brian Rose. Rose picked up the vacant Central Area title as a result.
Rushton collapsed on his way to the dressing room after the bout and ringside medics rushed to his aid, causing the then ongoing contest between Kevin McIntyre and Brett Flournoy to be declared a no contest.
Doctors at Hope Hospital decided to induce Rushton into a coma to stabilise his condition, a measure which reflects the seriousness of the situation and also reminds us all about the literal life and death nature of our sport. Typically, fans of all persuasions hit forums to wish the Doncaster man well.
Wood posted on the BoxRec British forum today, "Jason has been removed from the Intensive Care Unit and was yesterday sat up talking and eating in small spells. His body still needs rest and he does drift back to sleep.
"On Friday evening after his fight he collapsed on the walk back to the dressing room and a hospital scan shown swelling of the brain and minor bleeds. There was no blood clot and there was a minor operation so the pressure could be monitored – it was not a brain operation. He was taken out of the induced coma within 24 hours and his amazing recovery was down to his fighting spirit, his low heart rate and general fitness condition.
"His girlfriend Nadia, father John and all his family would like to thank every body for the fantastic support he has been given from all within and outside the boxing community. Extra special thanks go to the officials on the evening, Red Cross paramedics, doctors and staff at Hope Hospital where he is being given the best treatment possible and the Boxing Board of Control who have been in constant touch."
