Fewkes out injured until New Year

John ‘Fireball’ Fewkes, the flame-haired Sheffield livewire, is off tomorrow’s Rendall Munroe-headed Nottingham bill after picking up an injury whilst out running.
Fewkes has reportedly torn a fibre in the back of his knee and felt a make time fight on an undercard wasn’t worth the risk of exacerbating the problem.
"There was a crack in the pavement and I stretched over to avoid it and felt something go in the back of my knee,” the 24-year-old told the Sheffield Star.

"My physio said the best thing for a torn fibre is rest. Her advice was if I was only going to box a four or six rounder (tomorrow) it is not worth it.

"I'm going to be out until after Christmas which is really disappointing. I had so long out of the ring after the (Martin) Gethin fight and I finally felt like my career was getting back on track."

Fewkes has a reputation for liking a bite and a drink and blew up in weight following his surprise loss to Gethin in September 2008 which Fewkes puts down to taking poor advice from a nutritionist in the week before the bout. However, having seen him a few weeks ago, most of the excess had been shed and he looked very solid, having rededicated himself to the sport.

"I will train all the way through to Christmas," he said. "That doesn't matter to me when it comes to my boxing because I had such a long time out and all I want to do now is look forward and progress my career.

"I don't want to start going stale again. I want to do a lot better than a central area title. To win a British title would be a dream come true and I am going to keep on going and hopefully one day it will happen."
