Status Report - British boxers in the world rankings

So, how do British fighters rate in the world? A look at the latest published ratings of the four main sanctioning bodies shows just 31 British fighters rated.

As you would expect, there is no consensus of opinion with one body rating a fighter very high and the others ignoring him altogether. The era of any strength in the lower division in Britain seems to be over with only five fighters listed below lightweight.

Tony Salam jailed for six years

Woolwich super-middleweight and Southern area champion Tony Salam woke up in prison today after being jailed for six years at Snaresbrook Crown Court yesterday for sexual assault.

The 26 year-old had subjected the victim to being held prisoner in her home which concluded with her being sexually assaulted.

Irish Lightning to strike in Dublin ‘Homecoming’ bill

Exciting unbeaten Irish fighter Dean Byrne 12-0 (5 KO's) reunites with his former Crumlin Boxing Club coach and mentor Phil Sutcliffe as he is added to DolPhil Promotions' homecoming bill, due to take place at the City West Hotel, Dublin on Saturday August 7.

It certainly will be a homecoming for Byrne, nicknamed "Irish Lightning". The fighter based in Los Angeles, where he trains at Freddie Roach’s Wild Card Gym, has yet to fight on home soil during his unblemished twelve-fight career.

Scouse Pickpockets win hugely successful charity football event

Last Sunday's 'Boxer & Celebrity Football Tournament', organised by Canning Town's Ultrachem TKO Gym, proved to be a massive success. The stars turned out in force, as did the paying public to watch the ten teams battle it out for the Ultrachem TKO Indee Rose Trophy. 

Almost 200 celebrities from boxing, football, music, film, TV and the national press, made the trip to Canvey Island, Essex to take part in the event, which raised in excess of £20,000 for the Indee Rose Trust.

Second defence of his IBO title for 37-year-old “Green Machine”. Briggs, 34, a former two-time WBC light heavy title challenger had been inactive since February 2007 and failed to make the agreed weight. Rubbish was thrown at Briggs in the ring and on his way back to the dressing room, and the local Board are to investigate the fight, with some bookies refusing to pay out on bets.

As we all know, summer is a quiet time for British boxing fans.  In terms of shows, there is literally nothing to report on.  That doesn't mean we stop talking about the fight game though.

McEwan racks up 19 straight wins in the U.S.

Craig McEwan, Edinburgh's stylish  southpaw, racked up his 19th straight win with a majority points decision over tough guy Danny Perez from California. 33-year-old Perez had 34 wins from his previous 41 bouts and had never been stopped in his eight defeats, meaning McEwan had to do it the hard way.

Ricky Hatton gives big ring return hint

Manchester's former two-weight world champion Ricky Hatton still refuses to confirm his retirement, even though all of his actions since his chilling knockout suffered at the hands of Manny Pacquiao 14 months ago seem to point that way.

In fact, he has given a big hint that he might make a shock return to the ring - by renewing his boxer's licence with the British Boxing Board of Control.
